Re: Tyrone - Where to now?
bocerty wrote:in fairness P all our injuries have effected our forwards so thats bound to have an effect on things. Cavanagh Coney Ronan O'Neill - all guys who would have been in the first 15 i think. thats 50% of your forward line, take 50% out of any forward line and you have a serious problem.
I suppose what I am saying Boc is that Coney and O'Neill have not established themselves as serious players yet. This is Tyrone's problem - everyone expects the next Canavan or O'Neill to just roll off the conveyor belt ... but that only happens in Kerry! A lot of the injuries have been among the older players too. MH has got to wipe the slate now I feel and that means looking to the future without Gormley, McMenamin, McGuigan, SON or Mugsy. It might be painful for a couple of years but it has to be done.

To be honest Jayo, of those you named, the only ones that will make a material difference to how we do next year are Gormley and, to a much lesser degree, Mugsy. While we will probably be saying goodbye to those lads, we'll be welcoming back our injury victims Sean Cavanagh, Kyle Coney, Justin McMahon, Ronan O'Neill and PJ Quinn, so I'd actually expect us to improve next year, particularly when you factor in the progression of the younger lads.
Oh, and I should also say well done to the Tyrone minors and all involved with that set-up. Our Ulster title victory on Sunday was our 9th in the last 16 years - an astonishing record in what is always a very tough province at that level (4 other Ulster teams have won AI minor titles in the same period, showing how competitive it is). Next on the list, with 2 provincials each, are Derry and Armagh.

Re: Tyrone - Where to now?
Yes TC I think that will certainly make Tyrone stronger but I still think that there are a couple of now 'established' lads that are not the calibre of the All Ireland winning teams - good players but not that bit extra that delivers Sam.

I agree to an extent Par, but I think that there is little that 2-3 top class inside forwards wouldn't fix. In my opinion, the are lads playing for the likes of Dublin and Cork who are decent rather than good footballers, but Dublin and Cork have the scoring power to cover up a couple of gaps out the field.
Even when Tyrone were at their best, there were guys like Ciaran Gourley, Gavin Devlin, Ryan Mellon, Colm McCullough, Tommy McGuigan, Collie Holmes - fairly good players, but not among the very best. The difference back then, was that we had an inside line of Canavan plus a young O'Neill & Mulligan, and had Cavlan, Dooher and McGuigan behind them. I really do think that 2-3 genuinely top FFs would make a world of difference to any side. In Tyone's case, though, we could also do with a bit more power and size (without sacrificing pace) around the middle sector.

Re: Tyrone - Where to now?
Agree totally - from late 90s to mid 00s we had no real marque forwards. I used to enviously look at Tyrone with SON, Armagh with Stephen McDonnell, Gooch, Joyce et al and wish we had someone of that calibre. Alan B finally matured, Bernard came along and Connolly on his day is as good as there is - and it makes such a difference to a team.

Re: Tyrone - Where to now?
In what can only be sen as a positive step for Tyrone, former senior greats Brian Dooher and Philip Jordan have agreed to join the U21 management setup for next year. If those two cant inspire the next generations of Tyrone teams we may give it up as a lost cause.
We've had so many good minors and u21s of late and yet they disappear of the radar all too quickly. Hopefully these two can buck that trend, and put an end to defeats by Cavan of all teams!!!!!!!

Maybe it's a MH ploy to get them back playing .....

They saw that Terry the Tash won't be with our U21s anymore and seized their opportunity..

Re: Tyrone - Where to now?
so Tyrone have apppointed former All Ireland Winner Gavin Devlin to the backroom team. A guy once held in very high esteem by Mickey but who fell out of favour almost as quick.
I am at a loss to see what this is going to bring to the table as far as Tyrone are concerned. I know he has managed a few teams since he quit palying but i dont know that any of them achieved anything of note.
Maybe someone can enlighten me were this one came from!!!!

Good to see the 03 boys passing on the knowledge can only be a good thing

Re: Tyrone - Where to now?
Gavin was always a favourite a Mickey's, perhaps more so as a person than as a footballer. Although he was no longer seeiong playing action at the time, it was Gavin who gave the half-time speach in the 2005 AI final, recounting his memories of Cormac, and sending a fired up Sean Cavanagh and others out onto the field in tears.
I'd say that Mickey wants him there for a few reasons:
1) At 33, he is much closer in age to the players that Mickey or Tony Donnelly,
2) He is a link to the AI winning sides and provides experience/example in that regard, particularly at a time when a lot of those players are departing the scene.
3) He has had a decent start to his club managerial career.
He may or may not bring more than that, but let's see how he develops.
