i was chatting to a Tyrone player this morning and it seems young Ronan O' Neill may have torn the cruciate ligament, a big blow for the U21s who play tonight against Donegal in Ulster semi final

A blow for the seniors as well Boc. Extremely talented forward, and I'm sure he would have seen increased game time come the championship.

I'd be surprised if there is a better U21 corner forward around, so a huge blow for that team, and the lad himself.

It's a real pity to see him out with a cruciate tear. I thought he was immense in 2010 playing Minor. Gave Darragh Tighe a serious roasting in the U21 Ulster Final last year. Let's hope he makes a speedy recovery.

a huge blow indeed for the seniors TC - though he has seen very little football this year in the league. That said Mickey is probably taking the wise decision of not giving the U21 lads too much football

Ronan O'Neill confirmed on twitter this evening that the scans are back, and he has torn his cruciate. No football in 2012. Such a shame for such a highly talented player. Posters on here will know that the Tyrone lads all rate him the best prospect we've had in a long time.

Wishing him a successful recovery and a great 2013.

terrible news for the lad, the cruciate jinx strikes again. Was looking forward to the summer to see if he was going to get any game time and to see how he would cope with the rigours of high intensity football.

Hes a major loss to the U21 team and their chances of success have diminished somewhat with this news, he is captain of the side so hopefully the rest of the gang can use his injury as motivation to make serious progress in the U21 Championship, biggest stumbling block might be the manager.................

Coney Out For The Rest Of The Season?

In a week when it was confirmed that up and coming star forward Ronan O’Neill would undergo surgery for his cruciate ligament injury next Tuesday the news on the injury front for Tyrone does not get any better. Kyle Coney who has been the star attacker for the O’Neill County during this year’s National League campaign has effectively been ruled out for the remainder of the season. The Ardboe Ace suffered a serious groin injury in the second half of his club’s opening league fixture on Sunday last against Greencastle. Coney appeared to hurt himself quite badly when hitting a free kick off the ground and had to be helped from the field in considerable pain.
An MRI scan on Tuesday revealed a very nasty injury which will require surgery as soon as possible and will mean the All Ireland minor winner with The Red Hands in 2008 will play no further part this season for his club or county. Coney had been in outstanding form with Tyrone throughout the league and had formed quite a partnership with Owen Mulligan and team captain Stephen O’Neill. He was expected to figure prominently in Mickey Harte’s Championship side but will now, along with Ronan O’Neill, have to content himself with coming to terms with his injury and getting fully fit for the start of the 2013 season.

Now that would be a hammer blow for Tyrone. Ronan O'Neill was a loss, though his role was likely to have been as an impact sub. But Coney has been on fire of late, and was man-of-the-match in 3 of our last 4 league games.

In gaelic football there are no players as important as your full-forwards, and we are now relying on Mulligan and the injury plagued Stevie O'Neill for the rest of the year. Beyond that, you are talking Tommy McGuigan, although I'd like to think that Mickey will now re-introduce Sean Cavanagh to his Footballer of the Year position.

Beginning to know how Cork felt last year, when injuries robbed them of their full-forward line.

Lol, not really Boc, but I just would wonder if a groin tear could keep a 22 year old out of action for so long. 22 year olds heal quickly, and if he was available even in August it would be a big boost. Still, I'm not a doctor, so perhaps his year is done.

Not cynical on this one - was just being optimistic!

i suppose it all depends how bad the tear is - the fact he had to be carried off would suggest its worse than a normal groin injury. But as you say he could be available for selection towards the business end of the season.

Tommy has also been forced to pull out of the panel due to a troublesome knee injury, seems the knee flares up quite badly after training and games so Tommy is keen for an extended break.

Whats the odds on us seeing brother Brian in a Tyrone jersey before the summer is out?????

I'll be very interested to see the Tyrone side that is selected for the league final as, with 6 weeks to go until the Armagh game, I think it will be a strong nod towards the championship side.

There are probably 3-4 places up for grabs, with most of those coming in the defence. If we take it that Cathal McCarron, Peter Harte, Ronan McNabb and Aidan McCrory are all nailed on, that leaves Gormley, Damien McCaul, Conor Clarke, PJ Quinn, Dermot Carlin, Ricey, the 2 McMahons and maybe even Sean O'Neill pushing to fill 3 remaining spaces.

Midfield is looking like Colm Cavanagh and Mickey Murphy, with Aidan Cassidy more likely to figure as a sub. Joe McMahon could get in here in place of Murphy, or even into attack as there is a spare place there, but you'd want him to get reasonable game time against Kildare on Sunday if he is to start in June.

In attack, Coney's injury means that it will be it will be O'Neill and Mulligan in the full forward line, with Mark Donnelly and Sean Cavanagh playing deeper roles. The final foraging place would be Penrose's, but he has been plagued with injury for 12 months now, so he must be a doubt. That would leave Joe McMahon (again!), Niall McKenna and Mattie Donnelly fighting for the remaining position. I'd be inclined to give Donnelly his chance, although Mickey is likely to want Joey McMahon somewhere in his side.

If Tyrone beat Kildare on Sunday then, barring injuries, I'd expect more or less the same side to play against Armagh.

i think big Joe is really struggling with a knee injury TC so i would not expect to see him play this Sunday.

interesting to see that Kildare squad have just returned from a 10 day training camp in Portugal which, according to a tweet from Hugh McGrillen they paid for themselves!!!!!

Is it not a bit much to ask players to do this, what about those who are out of work and also students. Did they provide their own 'pocket money' too???

Mayo also headed off for a week in the sun but i think the county board footed that bill. Are these weeks in the sun of any real benefit or is it all psychological????

I heard that they raised the money themselves, which is very different. Don't know where the truth lies though, which is often the case with Kildare and their finances.

Shame about McMahon being out and, with Justy struggling, that could leave a choice between Clarke and Gormley for the full-back slot. I'd like to see Clarke get another run out in Croker, although would have prefered to see him take PJ Quinn's place in the corner, with Joe/Justy and full back.

I also would like to see McCaul come back in at No.7, having lost his place to Ricey through injury. Ricey hasn't done anything wrong, and perhaps he too could be considered at no.4, but I like McCaul's pace further out the field. McCarron, Harte/McNabb and McCaul made a seriously fast half back line in the early stages of the league.

McCaul played for his club yesterday so he should be available - i think he actually got the equalizing point against Errigal in a game which marked Davy Hartes return to competitive action, that should make you feel better TC!!!!!

I don't think that Davy will be starting this summer Boc. When he lost his place to Sean O'Neill last year, I think that was Mickey admitting that Davy had lost another half yard of pace. Not a bad man to bring on for 15 minutes when the game slows, but there is no way he would get in ahead of McCarron at RHB just now.

dont worry TC that last post was tinged with a slight bit of sarcasm - Davys days as a starter are well gone at this stage

seems you know more than me TC!!!

It was only last week i was told he was struggling big time with a knee injury and it came from a total neutral not someone who had something to gain from spinning yarns.

Seems Tyrones PR machine is in good working order...................
