Re: The Rugby Thread
Not a fooking whisper from ye about the greatest rugby team in Europe! At least go and sign out of the Ulster sign-in thread!
I have long been extolling the virtues of these goys and now they have confirmed themselves as probably the greatest club team ever seen in Europe. Hopefully they can beat the Ospreys on Sunday and win the double. I see that they are now dubbed the Barcelona of European rugby - an accolade I afforded them months back. They have been in 4 Magner's/Rabo finals and 3 Heino finals in the last 4 years!
Legends all!

Re: The Rugby Thread
I thought the Ulster thread had something to do with the opening weekend of the quest for the Anglo Celt cup. Other GAA going's on losing a few bob (not)on Frankel, the Giro, MCDowell, tour of calafornia, RáS, The champions league etc -Reopening of the UEFA ticket Portal its been fairly hectic
Katie Taylors success in China fully absorbed my bandwith on minority sports so apologies if i'm off the pace on yachting, Squash, rugby etc.
Caught something on the radio this morning though - Some New Zealand fellow - Brad ? talking about a big game against the Ospreys. Will keep an eye for it

OK, so the 4th most popular sport in a country of 5m people has managed to produce the 2 best sides in Europe (3 if you count Munster).
Shows how much interest the rest of Europe has in this game.

That would also be very regional
There are 13 cycling clubs in Donegal and 3 Rugby clubs
I do appreciate that you do have to have more scale (ie min of 15 to start with !!) for a rugby club
but cycling would have a much higher participation in Donegal than rugby -

Ah I can see why a smashing team like Leinster would not appeal to everybody.
No dark arts here - nor feigning, nor diving, nor messing.
They just play the game the way its supposed to be played and in a hugely entertaining manner. A great advertisement for Irish sports people.
Brian O'Driscoll, Sean O'Brien, Jonny Sexton, Rob Kearney and the rest - great role models for our young aspiring sports people. Regardless of whether they take up the sport the fact that their heroes conduct themselves so well on and off the field, play with honesty and respect can only be good.

Re: The Rugby Thread
It was indeed a remarkable acheivement and cant argue with your role model point reference the four mentioned - adding to that Brad Thorne who is just awesome.
Though to the Neutral the game was a bit flat after last years drama.
Listening to Newstalk on this last night and some other media comment and there seems to be a train of thought that the Irish provinces could become a victim of their own success.
Is there a danger that either a rule change on qualification or a risk that the French/English teams become more focussed on their domestic leagues.

There is a danger of the French/Englidh sides looking to change how the teams in the pro12 qualify which wont make much of a difference.OMAR wrote:It was indeed a remarkable acheivement and cant argue with your role model point reference the four mentioned - adding to that Brad Thorne who is just awesome.

The english/french hate how each country is guaranteed a certain amount of places for example glasgow and edenburgh could finish last and 2nd last in the pro12 and would still qualify for the heineken cup
The french/english want a change to instead of each country in the pro12 getting a certain amount of places in the heineken cup that the top 8 in the league qualify for the heineken cup regardless of the country they are from

That Leinster team are awesome! Just watched the ERC final and it was men against boys for much of the game!
Other big news, Geordan Murphy has officially retired from the International Rugby. A player that i always liked and one who i thought never really got the run of games i felt he deserved.

Had a pint or two tonight in the local. a rugby fellow who I know was telling me there was a tunnel 'incident' at the rugby match today and also a lot of booing by the home fans. Did not see it mentioned on RTE main news so it must not have happened at all or he was having me on.

At that juncture, RTE 2 wre demonstrating one of the great skillls of the national game/s.....i.e. the hook/tackle and clear, as displayed by Padraig Maher (Tipperary)....No fee for this display either to Padraig Maher or his team.......
Your Sunday "game" proponent is a different animal (to use the word loosely)....Allow me to emphasise:
A: A Fat/Rotund Beef/Eater /Meeter who enjoys touching edidble carcasses on weekends.
B: A big steroid en-hanced flab merchant who thinks he's Ray McLoughlin.

Re: The Rugby Thread
Yeah there were a few shapes thrown alright - the last 5 minutes of the half were full of friction - mainly due to the fact that Poitre has not a clue how to ref a scrum. I will refrain from any further comment on him other than to say he was shocking.
I have to say it was a most disappointing end to a great season for the lads, management and fans. I am totally against these 'league' competitions that end up as a Top 4 where a team 20 points behind the top can end up winning the league - ridiculous.
There were 17,000 fans there yesterday - mostly to see the team parade the HC - and maybe the Johnston Paints Trophy too. As it turns out they don't win the egg and spoon race equivalent and are left very disappointed on the pitch and unable or maybe unwilling to parade the HC. Doesn't seem right after such an outstanding season.

Re: The Rugby Thread
Playoffs are used to help ensure their is still everything to play for at the end of the season. If a team finishes well clear of the rest, say 20 points clear, it will have been obvious who are going to be the league champions and lots of the final rounds of games are only a formality especially in a league like this where there is no relegation battle. Take this season Leinster could have been awarded the pro12 title weeks ago if it was run on a straight league basis.Parouisa wrote:Yeah there were a few shapes thrown alright - the last 5 minutes of the half were full of friction - mainly due to the fact that Poitre has not a clue how to ref a scrum. Re: The Rugby Thread
Play-offs are just money spinnning exercises. To see a team top a league by 10 points over 22 games and then not win the title is a joke really. That's why I was glad Munster won last year.
