Re: The Rugby Thread
Earls is alright at 15, but best suited to the wing tough he hasnt been too bad at 13Parouisa wrote:Well OL we also need props to put on the bench. We don't have any. I think Feek is a very good scrum coach but he can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. IRFU are gonna have to do something and quick - and not by the route they are going.
ps Wouldn't let Earls near the 15 jersey - unless he was playing GAA for Limerick.
We have props capable of playing loose and tight on their own and a 23 man squad with a proper loosehead and proper tighthead is much better than what happens at the moment where we have someone on the bench who is good on the loose side but is very poor at tighthead

I have but a passing interest in this egg-chasing lark, but 1 thing strikes me...
This Tony Buckley lad gets the odd cameo appearance in a propping role. Granted he's big and strong looking, but it appears that once he enters the fray it's game over. Ray McLoughlin or Phil O'Callaghan he ain't....
The dynamic of the back-row is all wrong. The profesionalisation of the game has ruined us....

Re: The Rugby Thread
Buckleys technique is very poor and smaller technically better props in opposition can get under him in scrums and beat him wellBoxtyeater wrote:I have but a passing interest in this egg-chasing lark, but 1 thing strikes me...

Re: The Rugby Thread
I see no props OL - none that would compete with an outfit like y'day. who do you think would be good enough. We also concede a lot of weight normally at scrum time and while technique is vitally important this doesn't help either.

Re: The Rugby Thread
At that level the weight difference between opposing packs isnt that much and therefore saying weight plays role in how scrums go is not validParouisa wrote:I see no props OL - none that would compete with an outfit like y'day. who do you think would be good enough. Technique does help, even if you are 15kg lighter than your opponent
Look at seamus harty from nenagh, very good scrummaging guru. He is 64 qnd 14 stone yet will beat in a one on one situation the vast majority of professional props
There is a few young leinster props who are looking good as well as some young lads in munster who are not in the full academy yet

If your props aren't good enough in the first place weight plays a big role IMO ...

Technique is he most important, weight doesnt matter that much as if weight was that important tony buckley would still be playing for ireland and munsterParouisa wrote:If your props aren't good enough in the first place weight plays a big role IMO ...

Re: The Rugby Thread
As I said earlier technique is the most important thing by far but if your front row aren't up to it and are lighter it makes the problem even worse.

Weight doesnt play a role unless theres a very very considerable difference in weight as in a stone in difference per manParouisa wrote:As I said earlier technique is the most important thing by far but if your front row aren't up to it and are lighter it makes the problem even worse.

This clearly applies in the case of Gethin Jenkins of Wales. He must have 70/80 caps, doesn't look a monster.
So it's down to our technical frailties....

I would just like to express my congratulations here to a mighty England side who played with such heart and passion on Saturday. They were fully deserved of their great victory and I hope they enjoy every minute of their celebrations

More anti Ulster ramblings from Tony Ward in todays Indo .....
Kidney's options are limited but, on the basis of what we have witnessed in recent weeks, the future of some who have served the cause so well for so long must now be in jeopardy.
Specifically, I am referring to O'Callaghan and Gordon D'Arcy, while there must also be serious question marks over Tomas O'Leary and of Tom Court's role as a multi-tasked replacement (for which he is clearly ill-equipped).
Andrew Trimble is the personification of honesty on the wing but he is not a natural left-sided attacker in the role.

I see Luke Fitzgerald could be the next Irish International heading to foreign soil. Has been told to take an 80K pay cut to remain a Leinster/Centrally Contracted player with the IRFU according to the Irish Times

doesnt deserve a central contract so if he wants to leave let him its not as if leinster are lacking outside backs to playThe Puke wrote:I see Luke Fitzgerald could be the next Irish International heading to foreign soil. Why does he not deserve a central contract? Because he got injured?

Re: The Rugby Thread
Next season outside backs on central contracts: BOD, Earls, Kearney, Bowe, Trimble. Thats 5. The Central contracts are for the very top players. Is Fitz one of the top outside backs? No he is not and doesnt deserve a central contract.Parouisa wrote:Why does he not deserve a central contract? Because he got injured?

Re: The Rugby Thread
Prior to first major injury he was as good as Earls (who IMO is still unproven at very top level) He is also as good an option at 15 as Earls. And he is at least on a par with Trimble.
