Re: The Rugby Thread
Good result and all that but, like POC, I'm pretty disappointed. Really should have won that game - didn't score a single point in the second half which isn't very good at all.
Great first half display - enjoyed Bowe's "muppet kick" (as Keith Wood branded it) to score. Unfortunately France came out with hunger after the break which Ireland just didn't have. Too much indiscipline again.
And, true to form, Sexton cracks under pressure to throw away 3 simple - and crucial - points...

Sexton had a superb game Sami cop on to yourself. As for people saying we left it behind??? We were fooking ate in the 2nd half and did well to hang on for a draw. Some of these pundits would want to take the green goggles off. Trimble is not up to it nor is Earls. Our lineout was shocking and that Pearson guy never does us any favours - aside from an obvious yellow for Healy. Rob Kearney was immense and MotM by a country mile.

Earls is up to it but only on the wing, he isnt a 13.
Pearson isnt known as "blind dave" for nothing. Terrible ref

Re: The Rugby Thread
Didn't think Sexton did a whole pile wrong Sami. Missed the opening kick which was from near halfway
and kicked down the throat of the full back with about 10 mins to go when both corners were at good angles.
He made a crucial conversion (although just about) when he opposite number missed from simalar range.
which was the difference between defeat and a draw.
Kearney was superb
Holding on for the last 7/8 minutes without giving a penalty when the crowd and ref were baying for one showed huge mental strength

Dont think trimble is worthy of that criticism to be honest, think he played relatively well enough given hes only now getting consistent starts in the first team.
Think sexton is a good player, ROG is by far the better kicker and would have done much better with some of the kicks the other day.
Though Darcy was poor myself dont see much mention of him though, the irish very quick to blame the conditions when their "superstars" made mistakes, truth be told the french didnt make some of the extreme obvious blunders the Irish "superstars" made in the same conditions.

Heaslip hasnt regressed at all, he has adapted his way of playing and is playing more like an openside and is doing that role very well.

While O'Gara might well be a better kicker Sexton's defence is far superior and was a huge reason as to why we did so well. Once O'Gara came on the french were able to make yards time and time again down the 10 channel

Re: The Rugby Thread
Playing them both with ROG at 10 and Sexton at 12 would be a good option to look at as you can combine ROGs game management and place kicking with Sextons running game and ability to play on the gainline. It also gives you 3 very good kickers in your backline in Kearney, Sexton and ROGThe Puke wrote:North Side Gael wrote:Parouisa wrote:Sexton had a superb game Sami cop on to yourself. Humphries was a coward of a player, couldn't defend and always played far too deep, afraid to play flat in case a back row would tackle him.
For all that O'Gara is a poor defender due to his size and poor technique I can't ever recall him hiding like Humphries used to and has always put his body where it hurts, unfortunately he is run over most of the time

Re: The Rugby Thread
Both David and Ian Humphries were/are wimps in defence. ROG may get steamrolled at times but always puts his body on the line and puts in an attempt to stop the opposition when they run at him. Humphs hide and let people threw his spaceThe Puke wrote:Thomas Clarke wrote:ormond lad wrote: ...as you can combine ROGs game management and place kicking with Sextons running game...

ROG always commits to tackles even though he has one of the worst tackling techniques ive ever seen. Always too high

Re: The Rugby Thread
Typical Munster bias. Humphries had more skill and pace than Sexton, and was as good a kicker as O'Gara. A good leader as well. Just not fond of the tackling but, as RKF would no doubt agree, there are more than enough plodders in any rugby side to accommodate a Humphries, or even a Campese or a Guscott.

Re: The Rugby Thread
Not munster bias at all, Sexton is much quicker than humphries ever was. And Both humphries brothers have been known for their lack of tackling ability, which has terribly hindered their otherwise good skills.Thomas Clarke wrote:Typical Munster bias. Oh I think they got their answer to that one in Croker (of all places!) back in May 2009! And what a day it was. I still have my spoils-of-war red beret complete with gold Eiffel Tower which was [deliberately] dropped by one of the disgruntled and retreating hordes long before the 80 minutes were up. Best supporters in the world me ar5e!

Re: The Rugby Thread
Great to see the munster men have a selective memory, there whole reason for getting ROG in over humphries was that humphries was slower - as for being a coward of a player the other side of that argument was the David Humphries could actually play the game and was tough in the Tackle, in comparison to ROG.
Yes P i supported Ulster rugby most of my life, i always support the 9 counties at anything. Tommy Bowe due back here next year - automatic down grade on the Irish team for him then!

I don't think O'Gara was ever faster that Humphries, and would be pretty sure he still isn't. In his later years Humphries obviously slowed, but the man was very fast when he was younger.

Thats what i mean sorry is that he was slowing due to his age. Ian is the fastest player in the Rabo Direct.

I cant particularly remember why ROG was picked ahead of Humph consistently when he did...... Maybe he was the better playerNorth Side Gael wrote:Great to see the munster men have a selective memory, there whole reason for getting ROG in over humphries was that humphries was slower - as for being a coward of a player the other side of that argument was the David Humphries could actually play the game and was tough in the Tackle, in comparison to ROG.

Both Ian and David Humph have been known for being awful tacklers and shying away at stages from some of their defensive duties.
You've the wrong idea of ROG, he's one of the bravest tacklers you'll see on a pitch, always one of the lightest players on the pitch and has awful technique at tackling and regularly lets himself get run over yet gets his man down eventually.
ROG eventually became the better player(much better) when he found his feet at international level

ROG found his feet at international level? I've seen him play well for Munster, but don't recall him lighting up the 6 nations too often (and don't even mention things like world cups or the Lions!).
Considering most of his international career was spent playing behind a reasonable pack, and with Brian O'Driscoll outside him, Id've rated his career in an Ireland jersey no better than average.
