Agree with all of the above - and with TC the bank bail out was a bail out of the public - the deposit holders were ultimately joe public - The vast majority to the deposits were placed by institutions - but the institutions were other banks, or credit unions or pension funds - IF Anglo defaulted on this deposits those banks would have defaulted which always brings you back to Joe Public ultimalely whose savings/pension/credit union or whatever was the original source of the money
However there is one point raised by Mullins with which I am in full agreement
At the point where the guarantee was announced it should only have applied to Deposits and probably subordinated debt. There was unsubordinated (high risk - high return) corporate bonds that were also gauranteed - Anyone with money in these was taking a risk - Anyone who bought shares was taking a risk and lost everything - In my view
the same thing should have applied to a large portion of the bondholders they took the risk so they deserve to share the pain - As mullins says live by the sword die by the sword. The problem was once Lenihan said the bonds were covered he was stuck - because in reality he could then be sued by anyone that lost money after that point - but the gaurantee was rushed and a big trick was missed by giving a parachute to those that were speculative

I believe that savings will be protected. The current Government have committed to this, and a reversal of this decision is the only thing that could lead to a run on the banks.
If we do come to a situation where either the state or the banks default on their borrowings, it's bond-holders who will be hit. Ordinary deposit holders will be protected.
In my opinion the bondholders in the banks should have taken a hit already, the Government should have forced renegotiation of the banks' bond debt. Why protect one type of speculative investor (bondholders), whilst forcing the other type (shareholders) to take all of the pain?
Hmmmmm..... it's usually me copying your ideas Omar

It is with a heavy heart I succumb to the arrival of these "visiting advisors"....Truth be told, I being a FF man all my life, these current crop of, whats Solan's phrase, "Financial Terrosits" have brought us to where we are..and nobody else....The country was riven by greed, more this and more that, as the exchequer intake soared, the imbursements were quickly turned into reimbursements and the mythical "Tiger" roared on......
Now, we're no longer the masters of our own destiny, OK we can increase a jail term, but can't raise a dog license without "their" say-so.....

The upcoming budget has to be stopped at all cost ..We need to restore confidence in ourselves and our country this cannot be achieved while the present government are in power. Remember, in the last budget Lenihan stood up without a hint of shame and stated on Dail record. This is the last of the very tough budgets..Are these the people you want to deal with the IMF.if this budget goes through the next goverments hands are tied for 4 years..Its time for the pepople to put this goverment out of power..No point in giving FF the power to push one more Budget through with more savage proposals and IMF cuts against the weakest..ELECTION NOW BUDGET PUT BACK TILL SPRING

I would agree with that.....don't see how a government with a 10% aproval rate can pass and implement a 4 year budget.....I have absolutely no faith in a Fine Gael/Labour coalition led by Enda Kenny but at least they would have a mandate from the people and would bring a bit of stability to the markets....

Where does the FF mandate come from?
As for stabililty for the markets, that will have nothing to do with any Irish politician for a very long time.

That was three years ago, long before this crisis began and their approval rating has plummeted since, they simply will not get this budget passed and implemented, let alone a 4 year plan.....

Are you right in the head...of course the budget will be passed, unpalatable and all that it will be..A general election is the last thing the country needs at the moment ...Puke deserting the ship here methinks...
Get a fookin' grip here lads...times are bad but what if...A FG/Lab alliance...ye' may as well leave..

Re: Country is Goosed
The requirements have broad consensus. Any future Govt knows what it has to achieve - it has never been clearer. The 4 year plan will be passed as will the Budget - there is no stomach there at this time to do anything different. When current 'investigations' are complete a truer picture will be known and if stability returns to the markets (as it probably should) then the scenario for 4 years hence will not change hugely. It will boil down to how the magic €15bn figure and 3% will be achieved. And for once in all our lives it will be possible to scour manifestos and see whats what before we vote. If we fail to do so then we deserve what we get ...

I have far from deserted the ship boxty but there are plenty of lads in teh party who need to get their walking papers, the two FF's in Clare are dopes of the highest order......Like I said I have no faith in the other lot but look where we have ended up at this moment in time under the current stewardship....
have the election, get rid of Cowen and the chaff that is there at the minute and get Michael Martin or Peter Power in as leader and regroup and rebuild.....

In the light of 10k. tonnes of spuds being exported to starving Russians today, Boxty is preparing a delegation to visit St.Petersburg, to outline the benefits of converting same raw material into boxty...The Crane will, linguistically, be part of the delegation, but there are vacancies at management levels...

FFS an election is the last thing we need now...things are bad but an election...No..By all means have one in the Spring if ye's want but some form of stability is needed at this time...
Martin for leader A cowardly, gutless slievéén, hiding behind Cowen and lacking the balls for front-line confrontation.
Power: Unless he's one of the Paddy Power chain (Unlikely) he a no-mark..If brains were dynamite that lad wouldn't have what would blow his own nose, never mind yours....

Boxty are you for real people are leaving in the plane loads..Finna shame are going out of power within the next 12 weeks and gone for a long time..Why should they stand over any budget....I hope the budget falls and the people get an election..As for FG/Labour i think they would be a good alliance led by a labour Taoiseach.. Could be no worst than the fookers we have

In fairness boxty watching and listening to the likes of Carey, Roche and Killeen during the week it just shows you how much deadwood is in the party(and in irish politics as the opposition are just as bad) at this moment in time, a complete rehaul is needed

To be honest can't seem that the next lot will do a whole pile better but Im just getting browned off with the lies. IMF not coming - its Lehmans fault - This could be a positive - Dung after dung after dung
Biggest lie of the last fortnight was that gobsh**te from Cork. The one bit of good news we have had in the last month was Paddy Power creating jobs - A jobs a job and byjaysus we need them and best of luck to anyone who gets one. Im sure that there are a few good IT/Internet development jobs in the mix and thats great. But FFS why the Fook did Batt have to even turn this news in to a piece of spindoctoredmanure.
"Smart Economy" - face the facts its a Fooking call centre - Nothing wrong with that so there is no need to talk sh%%te.

Re: Country is Goosed
The brother's gone to Oz (Perth) in the last two weeks, no prosects of any type here for him at the moment. Dropped out of college a couple of years ago. In the 2 weeks he's been in Perth he's got 3 jobs! First job he got after being in the place 2 days was bar work Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. The next day picked up a job in a shopping centre in a shop selling sunglasses. Working every Saturday. A week ago he was offered a job in a warehouse, Mon-Fri 9-5. Turned it down as he was waiting on a labouring job. Got it 2 days ago. Working Mon-Fri 7-4, $28 an hour! He's no experience on a site whatsoever.
So instead of making something like €300-€350 a week here, he's looking at $1,600-$1,700 a week, before tax!
I know he's working nearly every hour under the sun and burning the candle at either end (he'll prob give up the bar work once he realises he has no social life/no sleep), but no wonder people are leaving for Australia!

If Lenihan says up to €100 billion then you multiply that by at least 10 based on his previous calculations.
And triona if you are back in the Kingdom at least we will know that nine not eight supporters will be travelling to Croke Park following Kerry next year.
