I would also say Mcginley is a very under-rated footballer. Much better than Cavanagh IMHO. Not a real star but as someone who can do everything. In '08 he really was the Footballer of the Year. Just a great all-rounder, probably Tyrone's best. He can score, pass, catch, defend, mark and support the play as good as anyone out there.
Ok we're going to have to have a cap on Tyrone posters around here........
Ah no its good to have Tyrone posters. Sure this time eight years ago they'd have had no business talking about GAA so there are bound to get a bit excited now and then.
As the Bible tells us, 'Blessed are those who have nothing for when they get something they can't stop going on about it.'

1994-2010.
I always thought Mickey quinn was a fantastic player, both on and off the field.
What sticks in my mind is in 1994 when the connacht winning team came to kinlough(Last town to visit as it is on the donegal border) not many of them were fit to talk at this stage. But mickey was the only one who was able to go around, sign autographs and talk to the crowd without making a show of himself. I was only young at the time and didn't understand drink but hugely respected quinn back then.
Of the current crop full back john Mckeon and corner back Michael McGuinness would make every team in the country.

Seems to be like Boxty was out and about with the ilicit hooch at this homecoming. Its a wonder ya didn't get a few swigs - age would be no bar to the Boxtyman when it comes to garnering drinking buddies. Ask triona!
ps From the stories ya tell here Johnnos you still don't understand drink!

Well there were a few bucks asleep on the bus if I recall. Highly unlikely a south leitrim man would make the trip to visit his northern brethren even with massive promisings of porter.

Wee Martin would be the one for me. He was a genuinely great footballer and deserved more from his service to Donegal (although he got a lot more than most Donegal footballers have!!).

Theres different opinions mullins. Some say he's happy with his current media work and wants to make hay with that. Others say he is waiting until there is a stronger team in the pipeline so he can have a better chance of success. Others say it's cause he's simply not interested in the sh1t that goes along with such a role. In others words I don't reall know!
I've love to see him in the job though. He has a clear vison of football and he did well with Cavan. Don't see it happening for a good while though.

Re: Best hurler and footballer you've seen play from your own county
Meath's best footballer (in the true sense of the word) would have to be Trevor Giles. He was, if you like, the Johan Cryuff of Meath at the pinnacle of his career. His eye for a pass was matched by his ability to be able to deliver it, certainly the likes of Graham Geraghty and Ollie Murphy owe a great deal to Giles, he spoilt them sometimes. Likewise, Trevor owes a good bit to John McDermott!
Geraghty is probably Meath's best player of the modern era but I don't think he had the intelligence, in fact not near, that Giles had. He was an athlete.

Yeah maybe the miracle is how Cavan seem to have gone back a bit since rather than what he did with them. Still, most people reckoned he did a good job there.

I suppose it depends on what you term 'the modern era', but Id've said that Colm O'Rourke, Trevor Giles, Martin O'Connell and Darren Fay were all better than Geraghty. O'Rourke was one of the top 3-4 players in the country in the late 80's, while Fay was (in my opinion) the best full-back I've seen in my lifetime. O'Connell is one of the best wing backs ever to play the game.
For me, Giles was also better than Geraghty, as he was the man who made things happen for Meath. Twice footballer of the Year, he delivered on big occasions far more consistently than Geraghty and, as you pointed out, made decent players around him look like stars. Boylan wasn't a man to single out players for special praise over the rest of the team, yet I often heard him refer to 'Trevor and the lads', acknowledging that Giles was the leader of his side.
I'd rate Geraghty a very good player, but not amongst Meath's absolute best.

Re: Best hurler and footballer you've seen play from your own county
I was discussing GG and TG with Loyal there recently.
I reckon Trevor was the ideal 11. Great vision and, as importantly, great ability to execute the pass. Add in his free taking and all round link play - and his temperament - and you have a great player.
But I think GG is sometimes written off as an 'athlete'. I think Geraghty had great skill too. He was also a great player at 11 - different to TG - but very effective. He carried the ball more but was also a good passer and score taker. He was also a very effective player in other lines - esp half back. His versatility was of huge worth to many Meath teams. On the skill front Geraghty scored some of the finest scores I ever saw in Croker - mostly against Dublin ...

Well Mullins that was a great Cavan team backed up with a lot of players from the Under 21 all Ireland finalists.. How was winning Ulster with them bordering on a miracle?

Re: Best hurler and footballer you've seen play from your own county
Graham was a big game player too! A lot of his best performances were when Meath most needed them, he particularly excelled against Dublin. But a general rule was that when Meath played well, Geraghty played well. Trevor, on the other hand, could change games in Meath's favour when we were destined for defeat. Although Graham often popped up with points and plays at vital times, it was not necessarily down to him that we won games. But with Trevor, I think there are certain games that he led Meath across the line. I agree with Jayo too, Geraghty was a supernatural athlete but he was more as well. However his athleticism was the best feature of his game in my opinion.
Two terrific footballers whatever way you look at them. Geraghty lasted longer, perhaps testament to his extraordinary consistency. Darren Fay, John McDermott and Ollie Murphy were others in the late 90s who were stars.
Nowadays, the two Brays apart, we don't have any players that could compare to any mentioned so far in this thread.

Re: Best hurler and footballer you've seen play from your own county
O'Rourke should be back this year! He played a few games for Simonstown at the back-end of last year. What sort of level he can return too is open to debate.
Plus there's the dilemma of what sort of shape the forwards will take this year. Personally if it were up to me Joe would be out in midfield and the two Brays in the corners. If Brian Sheridan was to improve his free-taking, I could see him starting at FF and Cian Ward dropped. The situation with Joe is a funny one, for Senchalstown he lorded midfield and was the provider of a lot of their scores. But you want someone like him in there winning the ball and in Brian, its possible we have someone.

As for hurling well i'd probably pick myself for that award!!!!!!!!!!!!
Would you not have gone for that Patrique lad?
he only played for Tyrone the once and unfortunately i never got to see him score 4-16 that day - he would be my second choice though

In my Time:
Hurling: Darren McCormack or Brendan Murtagh, both unbelievable hurlers who deserve the cliché 'would grace any county team'.
