Hard to see beyond Kerry in fairness Mullah. They have at least 4 exceptional forwards, the 2 Sullivans, Cooper and Donaghy (while not a worthwhile forward a big ball-winning target man)
Mayo, on the other hand, have a very un-proven set of backs. Their selection of backs over the summer has been wide-ranging and sweeping. They lack pivotal figures at 3 and 6 and I'd have no faith in Cafferky in any shirt, let alone in the No.3 one....
They should have started McGarrity at midfield and pushed Aidan O'Shea to 14. McGarrity is a big hardy hoor that would give you a great 50 mins.
Their forwards lack what I'd call power or cut...Smallish and nervy, inclined to off-load at a chance...
Were it Roscommon I'd fancy them stronger, direct football and good men up front..
Kerry, if they're to be contenders, by 6.....

McGarrity is probably the best midfielder left in the championship, hard to see why they wouldn't start him..Kerry have the forwards to win this game, but from 2-9 they are very ...
Hard one to call......If Kerry lose this one they are doomed for a long time.......If Mayo win tomorrow the championship is wide open for years

I feel that your complex with Connacht football is getting the better of you lad.
It would depend of course, on the teams involved, but I'd agree with Mullins that McGarrity is a fine midfielder in the context of midfielders.
He probably would be eclipsed in the negative tactical battles at m/f in the "modern" game, but Kerry, as always, will go for the old style joust at m/f.
Dara o'Sé has not been replaced at 8 or 9 within the Kingdom, Maher is a jennet and Sheehan, while a tidy footballer, is no Dara Sé...
I'd have started McGarrity for what he's worth, pushed Aiden O'Shea forward and tested then Kerry full back line with quick early ball...
Just my opinion.

The O'Shea bros are doing fine - leave them at it. I like and admire Ronan Mc .. but if Whelo was accused of going in and out of games then Mc Garrity is the past master ...

Whelan was never accused of going in and out of games Jayo. He gave a blistering 15 minutrs at some patch and then vanished...
Oddly, I'm sure RKF will repudiate this comment, like Mick O'Connell.
Strangely, to my mind, Whelan was very like O'Connell in ways. Tremendous, really tremendous athleticsm and skill levels but couldn't last the full game.

Whelo is the work of lazy journalists .. give a dog a bad name .. get a reputation for getting up early and you can stay in bed all day etc .... Whelan was a class MF

You're long enough around football and football men, not to mind Keyboard warriors, to recognise the poverty of your comment.
Whelan was a "fair enough" class of a midfielder, the average run of the mill type, generally produced by the likes of Laois, Offaly or Louth lets say.
A far remove from players of his era, the likes of Dara Sé, McGrane or Dermot Earley to name 3. These were solid team men. prepared to dig in the trenches, slough back invaders, fight in defence and when it was in the melting pot, find the wherewithall to grind forward again to eke out the result...
I'm sorry to puncture your bubble, but Whelan's name doesn't fit that scenario....

Wouldn't find a berth on the team of the decade (whatever his decade was)..Eclipsed by Dara Sé and Paul McGrane. Earley as first sub.
A middlin' midfielder to be fair, when the mood took him, but no John Quane....
I've admired both Limerick Johns' (Galvin and Quane) for years, un-heralded, but all round solid guys..

Have you seen John McDermott and Jimmy McGuinness?
I'm tipping Mayo for the win here.

Mayo going well, showing little fear or respect for Kerry for a change and it is paying off. Fair play to them.
Jayo, Whelan was good when on form but to much of a houdini. McGrane and O'Se were much better and more consistant.

Game for the defensive systems.................
Said it more than once in the last few weeks - Donegal are the most attacking team left in the championship.
