They managed to hold onto the chain of corner shops though I hope.....

Did a poll today of about 20 from work. All supporters of various sports, even rugby, but none have watched or will watch the crickets. The slogan ' Lifting the nation' seems to be slightly exaggerated :

Got Windies all out for 275 but are struggling along at 197 for 5 after 41 overs. Kevin O'Brien scored 5 off 9 balls! Bit of an uphill struggle needing 79 off 54 balls!

All not lost yet. A sh1t or bust performance against Papua New Guinea (currently short a few) could save us on Wednesday......

The dream is over Im afraid. Terrible the way we collapse after losing 3 or 4 wickets (the England game an exception).

FAO hurling guru.....
It's Friday afternoon and school is probably over, so now's your chance to shoot up to Closutton and ferret out a bit of news from the Mullins yard.....
Any info you glean that offers a solid pointer to the week you can relay to me via PM....No point in the whole forum being in the know.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Cricket thread
Yeah - I think we have now got the highest (v England) and 3rd highest run chase totals in WC history! It was the batting that let us down in this tournament though in vital matches (Bangladesh and Windies esp).

Somewhat of an Contradiction in terms or whatever the F%%k you call it.
If two of the games we win need two of the three greatest batting perfomances of all time when having to make up for a bowling peformance - chicken egg etc

I'm told that today's semi-final will be among the top 2-3 watched sporting events in the world this year - estimated audience of a billion people.

True, and Pakistan can collapse against the worst of them! Still though, I can't see them betting on anyone other than themselves in a world cup semi final against India, in India.

Re: Cricket thread
Where are all the great bowlers gone ? - I know in every sport its easy to wax lyrical about golden ages etc etc.
but it does seem to me that other than Murilitharan (who has one game left) there are very few bowlers on show who could hold their head up amongst the greats
I started watching cricket when we managed to get a pirated BEEB signal sometime around 1985 so every summer it was England versus "somebody" - Somebody always seemed to have 2-3 world class bowlers that on occasion managed to turn a postive English position into chaos during an hour on a mid saturday afteroon.
Names like Kapil Dev,Kumble, Imran Khan, Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Alan Donald, Shaun Polack, Richard Hadlee, Malcolm Marshall, Curtley Ambrose, Courtney Walsh, Glen McGrath, Shane Warne.
Lee and Akhtar and probably the two leading pace bowlers on show but hardly in the same league.
On the batting side - I think it has been reasonably impressive - Dilhsahn for Sri Lanka and the other top order batsmen - Sehwag and of Course tendulkar for India - Gayle for the west Indies - and even a closing cameo from an off form Ricky Ponting.

Re: Cricket thread
It's an interesting point Omar, but it should be noted that the bowlers you named spanned roughly 30 years, so maybe a tad unfair to group them all together and compare them to the best of 2011. There are a few excellent bowlers around today but, I'd agree, not as many big names as in the past.
I wonder, in the one day game certainly, have increased fielding restrictions got anything to do with it? If a captain can't place his men exactly where he would want to, that is bound to make it tougher for bowlers. Or perhaps video analysis has made it easier for batsmen to get a read on what the bowler is about to deliver to him.
Perhaps JC or Patrique may be able to offer more on this subject.
