Changing focus to "the cultural side"......
Leitrim claimed a fantastic 6 out of 8 titles in the provincial final of Scór Sinsear tonight in Loughrea. The home county took the other two titles in a tense and dramatic evening..... Leitrim 1-16...Carlow 1-12
Leitrim recorded an all too rare away victory before an attendance of circa 10,000* at Dr.Cullen Park this afternoon.
Opening brightly and dominant at M/F, Canning floated in a long one the in-rushing Glancy (Manor) forced the ball to the net off the corner back's (Cashin) knee in the 2nd. minute. Leitrim maintained their strangle-hold around the middle to lead by 1-05 to 0-00 after 17 mins. As we played out a ball, it became lost in contact and as Lyons attempted an intervention on the 13m line, the ball beat all defenders to squirm over the line.. .Carlow fought to get back into it but facing a stiffish breeze only managed to retain parity and the sides departed for their half-time smokes and hot toddys with the score standing:
LM 1-11 CW 1-05.
Highlights of the half were 7 magnificent catches and marks by Beirne and a wonderful point from 40m on the sideline and off his left by Foley...
Facing the sun and wind on the resumption we took a while to find our feet as CW tacked on 3 points to narrow the gap to a goal..Again good work by M/F assisted by O'Connor's physical presence, saw us steady the ship and match them point for point to the finish. A 50m solo from his own half topped off with a neat point from Wayne McKeon being the highlight..
Positives:Good work-rate, 11 points from play and no dropping of heads as we faced a resurgent Carlow and the breeze but I'd sound an early note of warning...we aren't able to take the ball into contact in the style of Kerry or Tyrone..we spilled a lot of ball that way today and this will need to be corrected before meeting the likes of these teams later on..
Negatives: Both corner forwards and their replacements weren't good enough today. Dermot Reynolds looks a yard off the pace and a crafty hoor like the Gooch would punish him on today's performance..
Referee watch: Carlow finished with 13 and we finished with 14 Glancy(Carrick) seeing the line on 65 mins (2nd yellow)..That said, there wasn't a foul blow or stroke by either side in a clean sporting game. The referee Derek O'Mahoney earned himself 4/10 for a very inconsistent display...loaded with authority and great lungs....

Fantastic-love to see Leitrim win-and I equally love to get a prediction right in Tipster!

Leitrim 0-13...Longford 0-12...
Another belated league victory...Past league failures (Clare-useless,- thrown away, debacle in Dungarvan, and gutless in Aughrim) have cost us promotion...
Positives: Midfield problem resolved..Shane Canning and Tómas (Mossy) Beirne dovetailing beautifully. Both McKeons on top of their form..Beck solid in the corner to the exclusion of Barry Prior.. ..
Doubtful: Full forward line replaced in total today, just unable to punch their way forward..small, light and one footed.
Negatives: Hard to call, but as said last week, the tendency to take the ball into contact is suicidal..Longford are at their weakest for 40 years, yet we struggled to overcome them.
Wild Card Throw: Boxty is contemplating a recall for Gortletteragh's All-Star, Seamus Quinn to the 14 shirt. Should Declan Maxwell fail to make deadline for June 20th (another Mini-Boxty due that day) the big man would be a disruptive figure on the edge of the square and well capable of knocking "handy ball" around...
Watch this space.......

I would say that Leitrim have just about shown enough in the league to cause headaches for many in the champo proper later in the year. An injury free Leitrim would be more than capable of taking a big scalp or two imo.

Re: Leitrim's prospects for 2010..
It's a nothing match for us at the weekend in Limerick but will show what improvements, if any, have been made to date.
Limerick still in with a shout of promotion so they will be going hell for leather.
Rintintin and Runt probably conspiring to take the wheels off the visiting cars....

Re: Leitrim's prospects for 2010..
Boxty, how would you rate Michael Foley? I remember him against Mayo a few years back and he played very well, notching up a few great points. Also, do you think Maxwell will be back for the Summer? He's an excellent player-'tis an awful pity that he picked up that injury.

Leitrim Ladies GAA News Leitrim Senior Ladies Congratulations to Leitrim Ladies and Management on their fantastic win over Limerick in the National League Division 4 Final last Saturday in Breffni Park, Cavan. The girls displayed a brilliant team performance and won on a scoreline of 2-17 to 2-11. Congratulations also to Aine Tighe who very deservedly won the Player of the Match Award. |
A bit of a start at any rate....Apologies Essie for not replying to your post. "Wilko" Foley is a hard grafter, small, poor distributor but yet in the abscence of Mulligan we are a bit dependent on him. Maxwell is about 50/50 but unless the leg is amputated sometime between now and June 20 I'd expect to see him start. If it's amputated sooner rather than later, expect to see the first one legged player is the game's history...

Time to oust Tweedlee and Tweedledum....
So the "Run for one" ends in another qualifier failure in Newbridge against a moderate assembly of "flourbags".
We must, by now, have eclipsed all known records in terms of qualifier matches...Played 9, Lost 9.
Boxty now feels it's time to show these spoofers (Moran and Morrisson) the gate. We are no further along than when they were appointed, in a fanfare of excitement and wild talk of "Heady days ahead".....
The bottom line is that they have cost us North of €100k per annum and we're still at ground zero..The golf classics in Dublin and New York, that both Supporters clubs run, do go a long way, if not quite fully, to funding their term at the helm but results have proven that these guys just don't have it...
Their selectional choices are in the main baffling and their tactical nous is on a plane with Forrest Gump....
Joe Flynn (Co.Board Chairman) if you're reading this, prepare the P45's....

Moran is a bit of an enigma Boxty - a great coach/trainer but never had it in him to be a manager for whatever reason, Morrison is a strange man to say the least - question is where will the deadly duo turn up next

I know it's of no interest to anyone but the Fenagh team had 8 players between 36 and 45 on duty in this one.
4 of these contested 3 senior finals within the last 20 years, most recently 2003.
Here we are now...
Boxty is fearful of a call-up for the relegation play-off...
