Leitrim's prospects for 2010..
To All Leitrim Supporters
The Leitrim GAA Supporters (Dublin Branch) invites you to attend the Supporters Club Annual Launch on Thursday 28nd January 2010 at 8.30 pm in the Herbert Park Hotel, Ballsbridge, and Dublin. (Entrance of Anglesea Rd,).
The 2010 Supporters Club will be launched by Gortletteragh native Joe Sorohan of Sorohan Builders. Joe is a former Gortletteragh stalwart, a former Leitrim senior footballer and was a selector on Leitrim's history making 1977 U 21 Connacht Championship success.
The team management, Mickey Moran and John Morrison will brief the meeting on their plans for the forthcoming season. Leitrim play the winners of Roscommon v London in the Connacht Semi-final on the 20th June.
Last month there was a change of county board officers under the five year rule. We are delighted to welcome to the launch the new Chairman of Leitrim Co Board, Joe Flynn, Carrick on Shannon. Joe is a former Principal of Carrick on Shannon Community School and will update the meeting on the new County Board officers.
Gerry McGovern the outgoing Chairman of the County Board will update the meeting on the Annaduff training Centre.
This will be another great occasion for Leitrim people to get together. Please spread the word to anyone from Leitrim who would like to attend. The night promises to be a very sociable occasion.
Tea/ Coffee will be served from 8.00 p.m. with the compliments of the Herbert Park Hotel. A Bus will travel from Leitrim to facilitate those interested in attending the event. Please contact Diarmuid Sweeney regarding same.
We very much look forward to seeing you on the night.
The accession of Joseph Flynn to the Chair is a welcomed option here. Before eulogising Joe, may I, as a Leitreim man pay tribute to the outgoing Cathoirleach, Cloone's own Gerry McGovern (with whom Boxty won a Minor in about '65) for his long and loyal years of service, tolerator of abuse, instigator of the new stand in Pairc Séan and rescuer of Boxty from a potential ruck in Portlaoise (circa 1996.. The Gerry's ---Browne and Flanagan were having a difference of opinion)...
Joe Flynn's legacy is built, not upon his decision to "quarter the team in the Bush Hotel" in his capacity as Co.Treas. on that memorable night in 1994* but on a lifetime of committment to the cause, development of schools football, free entry for school-kids at all champo games and a great supporter of the "Scór" project (Senior and Scór na n'og)...
The combination of the famed Bush Hotel as sponsors (wouldn't take the payment for anything in '94) and Joe Flynn in the chair ensures the future of Leitrim football into the new decade.....Expect big things....

They lost to Waterford last year (Or the year before possibly?) and cost me an accumulator worth near €250.

That was in 2009 Jon, in Fraher Field, Dungarvan. I'd spent an hospitable weekend on a cultural tour of Waaherfurd as a guest of Minister Cullen and this result fooked things up league-wise.

Lord bless us.
Absolutely appalling result today. Was embarassesd for some of the players they were that bad today. And to think we are only missing McGuinness, Foley, Canning and maxwell.
I can only cringe at the thought of us up against teams like tyrone, derry or Cork. They would laugh at us.

The Shrine of St Caillin and the Bell of Fenagh recovered from St Mel's Cathedral
Bishop Colm O'Reilly, Bishop of Ardagh and Clonmacnois told the congregation at the Vigil Mass in the Temperance Hall, Longford, beside St Mel's Cathedral at the weekend that over 200 objects have been recovered from the Christmas Day fire at the Cathedral including the Shrine of St Caillin and the Bell of Fenagh.
"Among the material damaged by the fire were the contents of the Diocesan Museum, located at the rear of the cathedral. Assembled in the 1930s and '40s by the late Fr Michael Kearney, President of St Mel's College, the collection was moved to the cathedral in 1974.
"The collection included almost 500 items and ranked among the finest ecclesiastical museums in the country, containing a varied collection of ecclesiastical material as well as objects of archaeological, historical and ethnographical interest. It included a number of objects of national importance, including the ninth-century Crozier of St Mel, patron of the diocese, which was found at Ardagh, Co Longford in the nineteenth century. Of equal importance was the Shrine of St Caillin of Fenagh, Co Leitrim – a book shrine dated to 1536 and associated with Brian O'Rourke, Lord of Breifne – along with the twelfth-century Clog na Rígh – 'bell of the kings' – also associated with St Caillin. Of particular local interest were a number of ceremonial keys and trowels used in commemorating the foundations of the Cathedral and other parish churches in the diocese.
"It seemed at first that the entire contents of the museum had perished in the fire. I am therefore pleased to be able to announce that – thanks to the efforts of a team from the National Museum of Ireland who have been working at the site for the last few weeks – a significant number of objects have survived and have been recovered.

Re: Leitrim's prospects for 2010..
Rego gone for the year. Devestating knee injury. Two cruciate ligament injuries in same knee and medial gone. Seemingly he'll be doing well to be walking properly by next year. Very unfortunate in his case particulalry having come back at 34 for one last hurrah, and by all accounts was absolutely flying.
Mulligan went to dublin last night for a scan on knee he had cruciate operation on last year after aggravating it at weekend. Touch wood not as bad as expected.

Sad to see that great Rossie footballer Gary Cox have to retire. Be a huge hit to Rossies but I still think they'll bate Leitrim asily enough.

Yeah heard that this morning (on Mad Whest ). Sad to hear all right.
I expect Leitrim to take them. There's good vibes coming out of Boxtys corner and Roscommon are going to stumble through this year.

The stories I'm hearing has half of the Leitrim crowd injured, retired, gone abroad and serious ruxtions in the camp about the money grabbers that are over them.
They wont keep it kicked out to Shine.

Drochscéal on every front.
Very bad news regarding emlyn. The best championship draw in years and a real genuine chance of reaching the connacht final. No chance now I think.
Hopefully surgeons will be able to operate on it again.
Rego got an awful doing the poor fella. 2 cruciates, medial damage, brusing on bone and cartiage damage.
2 great players in the one week for the club. Absolute disaster

Re: Leitrim's prospects for 2010..
Historically, going back 50 years, we haven't in the last 30, since the departure of quality scoring forwards of the likes of Packy, Cathal Flynn, Noel Blessing and in the 70's Mickey Martin been able to muster more than 12 points in most games.
In our finest year in a while (94) we won the C/final mustering 0-12 and agin de Duds 1-09 in the A/I S/F...
Since then, we seem, on good days, to be able to reach this magic figure with regularity and depend on solid defending...
Today, without both of our good forwards, Maxwell and Mulligan, we managed 0-17 and lost.....
2 questions arise: Have our forwards found the radar? (No fault ever to the Manor Glancy) or have our backs crumbled altogether?....No report to hand but despite a 1 point defeat, is there light?
