Re: Greatest living Irish person....Nominations thread..
Brian O'Driscoll.
Why: He is someone pretty much all rugby teams in the world would want on their team. He is an inspirational leader and captained Ireland to their first 6 nations grand slam. He was also the Lions captain. He was named on the Rugby worlds team of the decade and not only that he was also named player of the decade. He has won the 6 nations championship and European Champions with Leinster. However the biggest prize in World Rugby is the one he has not achieved.

Straw-grasping B&W.....Pat Malone from Croghan (where the bog meets the river, and a first cousin of the ultimate Biffo) retained his World title of Bog Warrior of the year last week....Bog-snorkelling, turf-cutting (breast spade mode) turf footing and stooking and general turbary maintenance were the criteria...
BOD, while having a bitéén of rogbee skill would pale in Malone's wake...

10 valid contenders (meeting nomination criteria as set out) for this title......Geldof, Cassidy, Reynolds, O'Leary, Roche, Murphy, Moore, Gunning, Mulvihill and O'Driscoll.
Of others mentioned, some were described as musings and some were just lobbed in without substantiation. This is a pity as there were some worthy candidates mentioned and hence we have a poor quality field.
Deadline extended till 23.00 hrs for additional runners, otherwise a straight shoot out....

I wish to substantiate my earlier nomination of TK Whitaker. Many may not know of him but his resume is quite awesome. After a meteoric rise in his early civil service career he became top man in the Dept of Finance at 39 - youngest man to ever hold that position. This was a time when economic growth here was non existent and we were (again!) in deep depression - shocking times. Whitaker and his team came up with the First Programme for Economic Expansion. Basically it changed the dynamic of the Irish economy away from agriculture to industry, manufacture, services etc. The change of emphasis was the catalyst for future foreign direct investment and under Whitaker's guidance there was huge structural reform and free trade flourished. He went on to become the Governor of the Central Bank, was influential in advising on Northern Ireland matters and was instrumental in the birth of the ESRI. There are also many other strings to his bow and at 93 his opinion is regularly sought out. An awesome man no doubt.
