Mayo V Tyrone-Match Report
Both Mayo and Tyrone secured their division 1 status for 2010 in an exciting encounter in the newly revamped McHale Park.
Mayo started the match the brighter, going 0-2 to 0-1 ahead, but this was short lived as Tyrone levelled the game by the 24th minute. Aidan O'Shea, the 18-year-old who is taking the GAA world by storm with his audacious displays, rattled the woodwork twice in the opening half, and was unlucky to get what would have been an excellent goal for his side. Tyrone hit 6 unanswered points, with a brace from Martin Penrose and Sean Cavangh, to storm into a 0-7 to 0-2 lead at the interval.
John O'Mahony must have made an impression on his players in the dressing room, for in the second half they sprung to life, Aidan O'Shea bulging the net with a cunning goal, smoothly by-passing Conor Gormley to send the ball home. From then on, Mayo stabilized the game and it was apparent both teams were going to fight to the bitter end.
Ronan McGarrity kicked 3 points thar an trasna, to keep Mayo well in touch with the All-Ireland champions. However, Tyrone weren't about to give up, with points from Seán O'Neill and defender David Harte on par with Mayo's points. The game levelled a startling 7 times, with Mayo and Tyrone swapping scores on either end. With 4 minutes to go, Mayo went 2 points ahead, but it was too early to dream, when two late points by Tyrone, with the vital equalling point from Martin Penrose sharing the spoils for the two teams.
Nobody could deny either of the teams the draw. They fought convincingly throughout, with some brilliant scores and a fine goal from the young leader for Mayo, Aidan O'Shea. Martin Penrose was another notable player with 0-6 points to his name. Both teams have now guaranteed places in the topflight next year, and all there is to do now for the two teams, is to look ahead to the championship, and prepare themselves for even tougher battles to come.
