Re: The Golf thread
Well done Bubba and Omar - a great result for both!
Watson was a very deserving winner, making 4 straight birdies on the back nine, and holding his nerve when most would have expected him to fall to pieces. His draw/hook to the final play-off green was a shot worthy of winning the Masters.
Oosthuizen was very solid over the weekend, and for a long time looked like the winner. His albatros was one of those sporting moments that will linger long in the memory.
Mickleson just couldn't give himself enough chances, while Harrington gave created a bucket-load, but missed almost all of them. If he could putt like he used to, he would have been in the thick of things.
As someone who has given him plenty of praise, I have to criticise McIlroy. Falling out of contention is one thing, but laughing and joking about it is a bad sign for the future. No-one likes the bad manners and ill temper that Woods displays when things are going badly, but McIlroy's antics on Saturday and Sunday were, in a different way, just as embarrassing.

Re: The Golf thread
nice one Omar that 50c each way was money well spent!!!!
i must be some sort of f**king jinx. I had a bet on Day and he had to withdraw, then i said Jiminez would be worth watching and the ar5e fell out of him similarly i mentioned Mickelson and Harrington and that put an end to their chances.
I think i'll put money on Dublin and Kerry to win the All Ireland!!!!

Re: The Golf thread
Was in Merrion hotel in Dublin on Wed night - Went up to the room for a quick shower/change - had a work dinner to go to. RTE 1 radio was on the telly (which is not my station of choice)
The had a golf pundit on who was making a reasonable argument for big hitting Left handers.
Bubba coming off a win ticked the boxes.
So thanks to the pundit - don't even know who it was.
may as well test the limits of a lucky streak - Lump on Geraghty for the Grand National

Re: The Golf thread
You couldnt make this one up!!!!
Jose Manuel Lara was disqualified from the International Open in Germany after his caddie tried to hide an extra club carried in the Spaniard's bag.
Argentine caddie Mathias Vinson tried to hide the club in thick bushes alongside the second hole, having realised Lara was carrying 15 clubs.
Lara was disqualified because a player is responsible for a caddie's actions.
European Tour chief referee John Paramor said: "We are satisfied [Lara] had no knowledge of what was going on."
The issue came to light when Vinson took a diversion from the fairway on the second hole of the Gut Larchenhof course in Cologne and Lara's playing partners, Damien McGrane and Peter Hedblom, became suspicious.
When challenged, the caddie admitted there had been 15 clubs in the bag.
"It was clearly the caddie doing what he felt at the time was the right thing, but was clearly the wrong thing," said Paramor, announcing Lara's disqualification from the $2.5m (£1.6m) tournament.
"He was seen entering the bush with the bag of clubs by his playing partners, who thought it was a little bit suspicious.
"They went and asked the chap, 'What are you doing?' and he sort of fumbled out an answer saying, 'I've got this wrong - I've done something bad. I wish it hadn't happened.'
"It was clear the club was out of the bag and in the bush at the time. He admitted it straight away and regretted his action."
Vinson had been delayed by traffic on his way to the course, and had to run the final three kilometres to ensure he arrived before Lara teed off. In his hurry, he failed to notice there were 15 clubs in the bag.

Shot 96 gross (76 net) today around Athlone GC. Level over the par 3's was a help.
Won a snazzy Pringle gansey for closest to the pin on one of them. Carried me own bag too.
Them cnuts at Kiawah Island don't know how handy they have it, ball spotters, caddies, top notch gear.......
Balmy conditions, with the mildest of breezes caressing the course off Lough Ree...
This, however, is not a sport.

I was in fairly exuberent form turning 9.
The 10th. is a dog-leg...A canny 4/5 iron to find the valley, leaving a 5 wood to the green would be the golfers shot but.....
The alternative is to be bullish. Boxty took the driver across the hill, with a bit of draw to (hopefully) find fairway 50yds. short. Alas.
I was about 10ft. short of the fairway, stuck in long scrawby grass.
2nd. was a hack-out and bunkered the 3rd. On green in 4 and 3/putted....
Held the head, (Boxty/ish) until the 16th. A fooking fierce tight par 4, along by the lake to your left and OOB (road) to your right...
Might have broken a windscreen in the car-park....Hit 3 off the tee....
But being adjacent to the Hodson Bay Hotel off the tee, there was nourishment available....

When he wins he wins
And when he,s good he is very good.
Some 39 holes of golf . Dropped 4 shots on friday By the 15th, makes 14 birdies from there, and no bogey today. Awesome talent

Re: The Golf thread
anyone know what the odds were on McIlroy to win? Was chatting to a guy at work on Thursday morning who plays a bit of golf, asked him had he any bets on, got the reply i am not a betting man. He asked who i fancied and i said McIlroy, never got a chance to get a bet on though, and just wondered what sort of odds they were offering

I heard two lads on Radio Nova yesterday talking about this. Apparently they were talking about backing him on the show on Thursday morning when he was 18-1. On Friday morning he was 7-1 they said.

Re: The Golf thread
Disappointing report from my efforts at Fernhill G&C club on Saturday. A night of carousing prior to golfing activities is the certified excuse.
The presence of several ESB pylons (many of which I caught a good look at) didn't help the cause. Dehydration cured at a wonderful 19th.
Not on my "to return to" list.

A quick word of congratulations to Rory McIlroy on his back-to-back victories in the states. When added to his USPGA victory, McIlroy has won 3 of the last 4 tournaments, all against the very best of fields.
He is now well ahead at the top of the world rankings, and firmly cemented as the best golfer on the planet.
