Mayo v Cavan
After one of the most exciting All-Ireland 40x20 Handball Finals in recent years, Mayo’s Dessie Keegan and Joe McCann were crowned Senior Doubles winners at O’Loughlin’s Kilkenny yesterday (Saturday). Cavan’s Paul Brady and Michael Finnegan were bidding for a fourth consecutive title but the Mayo duo failed to read the script and were deserved winners in a marathon final that lasted an hour and a half.
The game opened with electrifying pace and both sides looked determined to take All-Ireland glory. The sides were level on four occasions during the first game, despite the Cavan men holding an 18-14 lead and looking in control. Some top class serving from Keegan brought the men from the West back into contention forcing Brady and Finnegan to take a time-out at 20-19. Cavan returned to serve but without winning a point were forced out again by the Mayo men. After a tense rally, the Ballaghaderreen men hit 21 to take the first game.
Cavan opened with intention in the second game and went into an early 5-1 lead before the Mayo men pulled level. The Breffni men opened yet another lead at 12-6, with some top finishing from Brady, before Keegan and McCann came back to 12-9. Cavan then hit a purple patch with Brady finding the perfect serve to target the Mayo opposition as they quickly finished the second game 21-9 to force a tiebreaker.
In the third, it was Mayo who opened with intention as they ran into an early 6-1 lead. Cavan battled back to 6-6 before racing to a 9-6, but Mayo returned their fire to go 18-9 ahead. As was the run of this encounter, Cavan came right back into the action and levelled at 18-18 before going up a point. McCann and Keegan returned to served, held their nerves and finished out the game at 21-19 to collect Mayo’s first senior All-Ireland title since1980.
McCann and Keegan’s Ballaghaderreen club-mate, Stephen Cooney paired up with Newport’s Ian McLoughlin as they defeated Kilkenny pairing, Patrick Funchion and Keith Bourke to take the All-Ireland Minor Doubles title west. Cooney and McLoughlin were in awesome form, and with some clinical finishing secured victory on a 21-13, 21-6 scoreline.
