Re: School days!
SamiPremier08 wrote:The big thing with first years at Woldgate is 'hedging'. A medium sized hawthorn hedge lines the paths around the site. For years and years the young 'uns moving up to secondary school have been warned about the infamous 'hedgings' (i.e. getting shoved into the hedge) they will receive from the older folk. This of course happens very rarely but it still scares the **** out of anyone new to school.
In recent years, the hedge is best known for the hilarious antics of one lad who attempted to jump over it at its highest point. The set up was simple, Sami and three or four others were standing nearby said hedge when your man comes up and asks what we're up to.
"Just jumped over the hedge there mate" says one (talking utter rubbish of course), "we've all done it, bet you can't!"
Eager to impress, and under the belief that the act is possible and has already been completed by those watching, the lad takes a large run up before spectacularly failing to hurdle the hedge, going in head first about half way up and coming out looking like, well...he'd just been pulled through a hedge backwards.
Known fondly in our school as a "Hedgie" Like a wedgie but not as degrading. Good times..
Great piece there by the way Jayo..

You must be joking, but of course you are, having left the frigging place....50 odd years on from my experience of "Hedging", which consisted of being grabbed arms and legs and being lamped vertically into a whitethorn hedge, my recollection is not one of good times......

Re: School days!
No B I was being serious! The preferred action in our school was a guerrilla style attack. Hide as a group walks past the hedge, pick your target, size of victim being directly proportional to bravery of the assailant, and run and horse him into the hedge being careful not to be caught and dragged in also.
There was an equal rush being the victim, being on your guard walking in the vicinity of any hedge that split second when you hear the pounding of the feet running towards you and the formation of a defensive plan as soon as your eyes get the image of the pending attack to your brain.
Good times.

God bless youthful imagination is all I can say in all fairness.....All I can equate this with is the day, many moons ago, when I got a stern summons from a then respected Bank Manager, threatning me with the "Hedging Theory" and worse.... He was an alright sort, in his own kind of way, within his rights, within reason, but my instinct said "No more hedgeing" ..Fight or Flounder....So I told him the score as I saw it (from my perspective) and his options (from my perspective)...It became a bit of a "Die dog or sh1te a license scenario" and in the end he blinked....I weathered the storm, crested the wave, rode the rip and came out smiling...
There's a moral to your tale though, in all seriousness, Smart-asses and Bully-boys have had their day, Bigger, Stronger and Repetetive is not the means to progress

Re: School days!
Well I went to Secondary back in the dark ages. Cahirciveen CBS.Famous past pupils, Micko Connell.Jacko.Maurice,Jerome O'Shea and myself.Never really like school but the football that kept us going. Usually on the road on a Wednesday playing in some where in Munster. Passed Leaving with two honours. Was in London working for the summer when results came out and decided to stay and study there. Now this is the first September in 20 years that we have no one heading to school this week and are'nt we glad.

Re: School days!
Being taught to hate the Brits in primary school ......running up to the fence with sticks (rifles to us obviously) and 'shooting' at the passing Army saracens which always came in 3's for some reason. The greatest day ever at school when an Army helicopter landed in the field opposite the school (the day the stags ran past being chased by hunters comes a close second). And then 7 years at St. Colman's College being taught the art of football by Gaelic legends Pete McGrath and Ray Morgan........McGrath bringing in a 'Sherrin' when he was the Ireland manager and letting us basically kill eachother on the pitch while Morgan would treat every P.E match like it was an All-Ireland final. And then being taught hurling by the fíor Ghael Aidan Rodgers....just so we could take part in God awful cross-community hockey matches with 'thon sort' in Newry High and Banbridge Academy.
