Re: Leeds losing again
My 'affair' with Leeds started (I reckon) at the '72 Cup Final. This was a time when small boys got up at 9am and flicked between ITV and BBC for the whole day. The build-up - the history - the Cup was the thing! (Incidentally I saw a great documentary on TG4 the other night about Sam Maguire - the man and the trophy - superb - where people said Sam was unique in terms of its importance, history, romance etc. Well the FA Cup was like that - before 'money' ruined it - GAA take note!
I digress! I fell in love with Leeds when Mick Jones (who broke his arm in that final) crossed for Alan 'Sniffer' Clarke to nod the only goal! There followed much heartache as Leeds became the unluckiest club ever. Check the stats!! This was a time when the Cup final could be followed by the last league game the next Wednesday! I recall Leeds losing a Cup final and I think Wolves beat them the following Wednesday - so they ended up with nothing - despite being two games away from the Double - when it was really hard to do the Double!
There was the '75 European Cup Final v Bayern - the might of Breitner, Beckenbauer etc - when refereeing was really dubious! A roller coaster ride being a Leeds fan! I never refer to Leeds as 'we' - they are an English team and I am an Irish man (and they have awful fans) - but I like them ... and always will!
Good to see them back in Div 2!
