Re: A question for all who support English soccer teams
People usually support the league champions at the time they are growing up. So you have Leeds fans from the 70's, forest fans from the early 80's, Liverpool fans from the 70's and 80's and Man Utd fans from the 90's and 00's.

I used to support Leeds as well when they were in the Premiership cuz they had alot of Irish players on, but have always supported Liverpool (Because the rest of the family support United!)

Yes Clash as a Leeds fan I agree thats how most start! I think most people missed the whole point of this thread which was started by Loyal and intended to be of a slightly sarcastic tone!! And I agree with him!
Things that annoy Jayo - 1. some gobshite with the broadest Clare accent ringing in Moicheal Mack Mullllen on Sat afternoon talking about Liverpool or United or Chelsea and saying 'we did this' or 'we have a great chance' etc etc - FFS - WE???? You're from Clare man - or Cork or Dublin or Waterford or wherever - you have NO affiliation with any English city or team - do not say WE!!
2. Some guy telling me that he would rather Utd/Liverpool or whoever he supports to win the Premiership than his county to win Sam or Liam!! That REALLY REALLY ANNOYS ME - IT DRIVES ME F***ING MAD!! And I have had this from 'supporters' from lots of counties!
I like soccer and loved it as a kid and played a lot of it - more than GAA. There are some great teams and players and played well (not a lot) it is a good game. But the money involved (salaries, tickets, transfer fees, bungs etc) sickens me - guys on a weekly wage that would feed villages in the Third World for ever. Obscene!
Hence I can no longer take soccer seriously. And while I can go down to Croker in me blue and cheer on MY team - I could never do that with anything like the same passion for any foreign team - French or Spanish or English - rugby or hockey or soccer - its not my identity. I could actually understand someone having that passion for Bohs or Rovers but not Utd or Liverpool! For what died the sons of Roisin indeed!
Rant over - my blood runs blue!

Re: A question for all who support English soccer teams
I get your point JC, while I'm a big Utd fan there's no comparison when it comes to the GAA. Never mind a choice between the Premiership or Sam/Liam, I would far rather Monaghan win an Ulster championship than the next three Champions Leagues/Premierships/whatever. Have to say though, I've never heard anyone(GAA fans obviously) say that about prefering the Premiership over Sam/Liam, and I'm very surprised that you hear it often. But what is it that annoys you most about it, the fact that people support soccer teams or that some prefer them over their county. I agree that the latter is absolutely ludicrous, but I don't think the former is so bad.
As I say I am a big Man Utd fan, and have been from a young age, but nothing could take the place of the GAA for me. Maybe you wouldn't think that or don't believe me given how I've talked about Utd, but believe me if I had to make a choice I wouldn't hesistate for a second. There's no reason why both sports can't be enjoyed of course! Soccer can be a fantastic game to watch at times and I don't see what's wrong with supporting a team. But I know what is my no. 1.
PS, it was obvious was Loyal was on about!

Re: A question for all who support English soccer teams
MMM - I think the WE thing gets to me tbh! Like no Irish guy is from those places so how can it be WE? If I am talking about Dublin and you are talking about Monaghan then it's most certainly WE and US. Its our identity - its part of what we are.
I also find it funny that most of these lads would probably be the first to march on a certain Embassy in the bad old days.......
And I find the whole Premiership money thing obscene and avaricious in this day and age. While great players in the past were left penniless at the end of their careers (as recently as Neil Webb) and that was wrong - it has gone off the scale the other way now. The ordinary fan has been forsaken and corporate business rules - we should note!
Incidentally I find watching an Arsenal team with not a single English player in the first XI a little strange too!

Re: A question for all who support English soccer teams
Yeah I know what you're getting at with the "we", though I must admit I've been guilty of that on occasions! But yeah there is a fair bit of difference between that, and saying we when referring to your county team, because that is actually literal.
Soccer is changing rapidly though, the amount of moneyt being pumped in really is obscene, you'd have to wonder where it's going to end. It's a great game to watch when at its best as I say, but this could really ruin it, increasing ticket prices etc. God knows what a regular transfer fee for a decent player will be in 10 years time, never mind a top-class one.

Re: A question for all who support English soccer teams
I have to say, that i'm really glad that i was born in ireland with the gaa as my mother sport because soccer could never be as good as the gaa. The love we have for our county teams and the respect and personal knowledge we have of our county players(and club), we would never have in supporting soccer teams. Those players are paid diabolical amounts of money a week, while our players dont get paid, they do it for the sheer love of the game. That's where our respect for them comes from. To me, the gaa is like a big family, but soccer is like a distant 4th cousin twice removed. You can never count on a soccer player being loyal to your team, because the first sight of more money and theyre gone-but you can nearly always count on a gaa player! Tá grá mhór agam don GAA

Re: A question for all who support English soccer teams
what always amuses me about soccer fans here in ireland (and no doubt it is the same througout the world) is that when the likes of Rooney is wearing a United jersey he is the best thing since sliced bread and yet when he pulls on an England jersey he is the biggest w**ker on the planet.
I have to admit I am a united supporter, i started supporting them in the early eighties when success was at a premium - and while united supporters are often the butt of many jokes the easy thing for me to do then would have been to support Liverpool. They were the successful team at that time winning League titles and European cups almost for fun. If anything it was the players who played for them like Hughes Robson etc who influenced me rather than the team itself. Though my father had some influence - he is a Sunderland supporter but always had a soft spot for United after Munich.

Yeah Boc - on the money there. Cheer for the guy at the weekend and then when he pulls on the international shirt abuse him!!! I remember a great guy (and late RIP) in my local in Dublin years ago almost coming to blows with some muppets over this!! I actually like the English soccer team - its just the fans, commentators, media and hype surrounding them that pisses me off!!
Now where have I heard that before??

Re: A question for all who support English soccer teams
if your looking to support a team in the Premiership then i would look at a team who are up and coming instead of just going for one of the teams at the top. a team like Everton or Aston Villa will give you more thrills and spills over the years than Man Utd or Chelsea will.
If your looking for a team outside the premiership i would say look for the same reason. a team like Reading or Leicester or Leeds are teams who are on the up and will be in the premiership in the coming years.
I myself support Leeds but when i was younger i was a Man Utd fan cause it ran in the family. once i got to the age of being able to think for myself in terms of soccer i looked at who was up and coming and at the time it was Leeds, but look at them now. iv supported them through Champs League semi-finals, Administration, Relegation and Play-off heartache. lots of ups and downs but its great to support a team that can provide that. much better then supporting a team who only have about 10 important games in a season(champs league final, FA cup final, matches vs top4). supporting a team like Leeds every game is an important game and you get put through the ringer every single weekend. there is also the great craic that comes with meeting up with other fans when your team is on TV, which aint every 2nd day like it is with the big teams.
overall, i say go for a lower team that you can truly follow instead of a team who might walk away with every competition they are in and dont give their fans as much highs and lows.....fellow Leeds fans will no doubt agree with me

West Brom, huddersfield town or sligo rovers loyal. forget about the rest.
Following on a tangent from other posts was watching the arsenal liverpool game this season. Keane stuck it in the back of the onion bag and some lad stood up and called him a fcuking scumbag. That left me rather bewildered.

Anybody going to see "The Damned United", its out friday. Martin Sheen the actor who plays Brian Clough in it was on Tubridy last Saturday night but he was also on Soccer am that morning so I heard the same stories twice. I bet if anybody does go to see it your bound to see someone at it in a Leeds or Forest jersey.
ESPN channel 442 are showing clips and interviews every night at 8:10pm. Last night he told a young John Motson he knew nothing about football.
