Who is the best sportsman in the world today?
Who is the Best Sportsman in the World now?
Well, who is it? Who is in your eyes the greatest sportsman OUTSIDE THE GAA? Only other condition is that they have to be competing at the moment!
I'm truly torn in this one to be honest,
Phil Taylor may only throw arrows at a dartboart but to stay at the top of his sport (and it is classed as one) for so long is truly amazing.
Roger Federer has to be without doubt the greatest ever tennis player, just look at the records he has smashed and he has kept all other challengers at bay (even grumpy Jocks)
Tiger Woods is pretty much self explanitory, the man is awesome and just a machine.
Many Pacquiao is at the moment the best boxer in the planet and he just keeps proving it, a great example of why you shouldn't mess with a short man!
Kenenisa Bekele is possibily one of the greatest distance athletes of all time and he has won EVERY 10,000m race he has competed in, quite a record. Quite a few of you won't have heard of him but trust me, he's good!
Tony McCoy, i can't stand the pompus little p**** but he sure can ride a winner or two. A mate of mine has his suspicions about him rarely winning when at short odds but you can't argue with his record
Who do ye think folks? Is there anyone i've missed out or is there any points you want to put for or against my selections?

Very tough one. I've gone with Tiger because of his consistency. He won his first mayor at 21 and hasn't looked back since. Can't say I like the man but he's top class.

You could argue the same with Federer......and Bekele.......and Taylor!
I do agree that Tiger winning a Mayor at 21 was some feat, which one was it? They Mayor of Lifford?

I voted for Tiger out of the available options, but would have given my No.1 to Ussain Bolt had he been an option.

Read a book on Sid Waddell's book on darts this year and amazingly Phil Taylor was in his 20's before he really took up darts. He went to a darts exhibition in which Eric Bristow was playing and he said to his wife "I could beat him". The next day his wife bought him a set of darts and the rest is history as they say.

I went to a quiz one night where they were asking about capital cities. Said to the missus 'I could beat the guy answering those questions!' She bought me a book the next day and the rest is geography as they say .........

Re: Who is the Best Sportsman in the World now?
I like Manny Pacquiao a lot but until he beats Floyd Mayweather he'll be the number 2 boxer in the world in my opinion.
Here's another name though, Usain Bolt. Fastest man on the planet pulling up and I didn't think I'd see Michael Johnson's 200 metre record fall for many a year. Granted he's only been going a short time compared to the names listed but it's the way he's just smashed those records that's so impressive and the potential to break them over again is awesome.

Sorry Boxty you beat me to it, I missed your post. A good shout to get him on the list though, especially if he moves up to 400 metres and takes Michael Johnson's record at that.

Re: Who is the Best Sportsman in the World now?
A guy I know thought he was a nut and was incarcerated in an institution. Spent his day ramming his head into nuts (!) and screws. He took up athletics and got a lot better - and faster. One day the specialist aid 'We're letting you home now'. He said 'Why?' Doc said 'We think you sane bolt'.........

Re: Who is the Best Sportsman in the World now?
Usain Bolt is a brilliant athlete, but i made my choices by only picking who i though were the best at one sport (ie athletics) and for me the exploits of Bekele far eclipse that of Usain Bolt.
Perhaps if in 8-10 years time Bolt is still winning gold medals and breaking world records like Bekele is then i might rate him the same. What Bolt has done is make people take note of athletics again for the right reasons, but Bekele has never been beaten in one of his chosen diciplines and has come up against some brilliant competitors that have tried and failed.
That's my view, but the debates still open! There may be others so put a case together for them!

Re: Who is the Best Sportsman in the World now?
After watching Ronnie O'Sullivan again yesterday, I have to admit I think he's the best sportsman in the world. Could Didier Drogba curl in a free kick with his right and then curl in another from the same distance with his other foot.
Could phil Taylor hit 180 off his right hand and then rack up another with his left hand.?
I don't think so.
There is something fascinating about the man.

Re: Who is the Best Sportsman in the World now?
I think there is a lot of truth in what I said. I know darts and snooker players may not be the fittest or most agile sportsmen in the world, but you can't ignore the fact that ronnie is unbelievably talented. Can tiger woods drive a ball 290 yards down the fairway, and then go to the next hole and drive off his other side. No

Dunno Johnnos - but apparently he can't drive off on his other half - not at least without getting his windows put in .....

Re: Who is the Best Sportsman in the World now?
So if Phil Taylor could hit a 180 from his left and right hand he would then be the best sportsman in the world?
I agree that Ronnie is a fanstatic talent but for me his mind messes everything up for him, he has the ability to hit a 147 inside 6 minutes then lose to an unknown in the next match.

Re: Who is the Best Sportsman in the World now?
Tom Brady.
Michael Vick might have a shout for greatest athlete, but I don't think he can ever be called a "sportsman." Ger Cavlan's lucky he doesn't live in America.
Northern Ireland - fine of £650, costs of £4,300 and a 5 year ban from owning certain types of dogs.
Same offence in the USA - 23 months in prison, separate 3 year suspended sentence, and over $1million paid over to pay for the care of dogs injured in the activities.......
