People rise up against the ruling Government, are quelled and shot by firing squad.

People rise up against the ruling Government who try to quell uprising but are overthrown resulting in leaders probably brought before international courts .....

From an American viewpoint the great thing about North African/Middle East Dicatatorships is at least you know who the bad guy is, what he wants and how many there are - Better the devil you know and all that.

Once you bring in a bit of democracy who knows where you end up.

In order to run the most powerful country in the western world the USA you needs millions, im sure its the same in britain the second most powerful, maybe we need to look at what democracy is again?
