Very bad drink problem in this country?
After I read a certain poster's comments this morning whilst she/he was presumably very intoxicated, it really got me thinking about the problem this country has with alcohol.
The youth of today just drink to get out of their heads. That is the culture which 95% of the young population are brought up on. The big problem is that most of that 95% can't drink. For instance, the other day, I had a feed of Carlesberg, maybe eleven pints (not an unreasonable amount by any stretch of the imagination), I drove home, not a bother on me. And before I went to bed, I posted a few messages on here. They were my usual well though out, grammatically correct posts where the appriopriate syntax was used in the appropiate places.
Unfortunetely, I am in the minority here. I know when I've had enough. I don't go drinking treble vodkas, fat frogs and sambookas???, I don't go out to get locked. I just have a few quiet points and head home. But this attitude is adopted by very few people in this country. It would also appear that this drink problem extends to a certain forum where I am a regular contributer and that really is a disappointing thing. Why do ye think ye can drink so much when you can't? Why do you come on here and fill the place up with stuff that is the work of a two year old?
Anyway what are the solutions?
Well, for a start, I think there should be a limit on what you can buy in an off-licence. Also, people under a certain age should only be allowed to buy a maximum maybe of one vodka or two pints in one public house? More gardai are also needed when nightclubs close. The abuse one Italian national was subjected to one night I was out was simply unbelievable. He was working in a chipper probably trying to put a bit of food on the table (for his family I mean).
Maybe I am in the wrong though, maybe I should go out and get locked every night? Maybe I can be accused of not being Irish enough?
What are other forum members thoughts on this? JayoCluxton, have you anything you'd like to contribute? Boxtyeater and Patrique, ye two seem reasonably level-headed, what do you think?

Bang on the monney as usual Loyal (apart from your pre match call on Dub-Westmeath! ) I dunno whats wrong with the youth of today. A good night out consists of not remembering a thing!
Typical conversation among students 'How did ya get on last night?'
'F****in great - got out of me head - puked - can't remember a thing - magic.'
There is nothing I like better than a few pints of an evening - especially Friday. Down to the local - 7/8 pints of Heino - no shorts or dumbshots as I call them - and a brisk walk home - unless I have the motorbike with me. Regularly stepping over drunk youths or growling at any that pass a smart comment.
Shocking stuff really ......

Yeah and even a lot of people carry their drinking culture through to adulthood. Most Irish in their twenties and thirties still think its hilarious to go out and get sick all over the place. Like surely there is a big problem here? Plus at least four or five well respected posters are earning a bit of a reputation for coming on spouting nonsense on GAA fora whilst clearly under the influence of some sort of drug, alcohol or otherwise. And alcohol is a drug.

I read this post this morning, added my views, and found myself looking stupid in the aftermath. I rescued my own position somewhat, but, while looking on the forum like a spanner, the post, as posted was off the radar.

The hare being raised here smacks of double standards. This issue was discreetly dealt with by myself this morning (other parties will know this) and this "high moral ground" scheit from Loyal is only ball-hopping.

Re: Very bad drink problem in this country?
As an alcoholic Loyal I actually haven't had a drink since August 1990, just after we lost to Cork in the semi that year.
I became a druggie instead, much healthier, believe me.
So now you know why ALL of my posts, even in the wee hours of the morning, are lucid, intelligent, thought provoking, wise and virtuous.

So obviously I would have to agrtee with the title of the thread, although I became a serious drinker in England. The pint culture there, with books, local guides, magazines and pamphlets devoted to drinking pints, and which pints, is unbelievable.
George Best was right, Irish people don't drink compared to England.

Can vouch for this. Ran a bar in London for a couple of years and you will NOT see drinkers like the London Irish. I suppose its a question of drinking culture, and in fact it has a lot to do with womens lib as with women having their own money now and stuff drink companies have been manufacturing all sorts of easy to drinks sweet tasting drinks that are quite high in volume and sugar content so lads who do be drinking this would be more wired and liable to start fights. A typical night out now for the youngsters would start at home with a few bottles of wine, or bucky, than some nacker drinking, than the pub(arriving already bananas drunk and buying yega-bombers and baby guinness etc), than some club then into the streets which if Galway City is anything to go by can resemble something like the last days of the Roman Emperor at 12 to 6 in the morning of a Fri/Sat or any night really.Gone are the days when a lad could have 17 or 18 pints and feck off home in peace.

Re: Very bad drink problem in this country?
True Mossbags. I think that baby guinness thing is a good idea, people who think they can drink all before them can now get a baby guinness and only have what they are capable of having. I wouldn't be a huge fan of the black stuff myself, 9 or 10 pints of it would be my maximum but at least others with lesser stamina can now have 9 or 10 baby guinnesses as opposed to 9 or 10 proper guinnesses and get the same enjoyment out of it.
Can you get baby Bulmers or baby vodkas these days? Really, everyone needs to start drinking smaller portions of alcohol, these baby drinks - definitely a good idea.
