Could be a very Short Summer
Croker have lost the plot
Refs are now to get €13.85 to do a game, a figure passed because it is the average hourly rate of a civil servant. There is no allowance for the time to travel to and from a game.
The are to get a travel allowance of 50c a km/mile (not to sure on this).
If you are doing a line (linesman) at a double header you will only get paid for one game.
In practice if a linemans travels 20 miles to a game and a ref only travels 10 the lineman will get paid more!!
Could be looking at a very short summer!!
Most people do games in a 5/10 mile radius I cant see people do games for this and still be subject to a tirade of abuse and no changing facilities in at least 60/80% of grounds.
This fee is for 60mins i.e a 30 min half and is to reduced accordingly if the half reduces 20,25 etc.
It will be now truly for the love of the game and then you will wonder why the standard and numbers will drop.
The poor ole umpire will be getting no more meals won't even get 5 bags of chips now.

If they are getting paid they better do their jobs properly.
Welcome back Jim.
Welcome back Jim.
Re: Could be a very Short Summer
Looks like we will have a lot more Joe McQuillans. Blowing early due to non payment. Seriously it is not going to encourage referees to give their time travel etc. for the games.Mention also of Revenue checking refs' payments. After the players the most important person in our games and yes Jim we could have many a match cancelled due to non appearance of ref.

Noticeable change of heart from the intrepid Jim here. Perhaps the issue at hand may be affecting him personally.
Croker were however, on the button when it came to denying the 9 year olds of Ballinamore any chance of participating in Feile na Gael during their young years (according to Jim)...

Re: Could be a very Short Summer
Yep effecting me and all other club members.
a ref gets 40 euro for a match in wexford total payment a club makes
under new proposed scheme
ref gets €13.71 plus 50c a mile (in a day when km are the measure of travel and penalty points... another day)
also his 4 umpires get €13.71 plus 50c a mile
so for a 10 mile round trip i would get €18.71 to do the game
But the charge to a club could be €93.55 i.e (5 x 18.71)
that is how they have lost the plot
also for championship add in 2 lines-people as well.
he's a kicker you have a choice of the €13.71 or a meal (which could be up to €20+)
games get expensive and that is not just for adult but all coiste games as well, U12 upwards.
who pays for this but the muggins involved
great money saving scheme, boxty your slipping, surprised you didn't think about it, you type of devious thinking. .
it will personally effect me as well as i would lose 20 a game but that i really couldn't give a pony about.
Effect me 10 times more been over teams and with young lads playing on up to 6 teams

I'm not having a stab at you here Jim but to clarify your position, have I this clear?
2011: You got €40 per game. Fair enough. Had you to "look after" your umpires? How did this work for you in terms of the lads, or were they happy enough to "be part of the occasion". You needn't respond on the forum if this is a delicate subject, given that the Minister Varadker is probably lurking.
2012: Your fellow Wexican, Herr Howlin, is encouraging belt-tightening. Revenues are slumping, yet a clear proposal from Croke Park seems to advocate fixed payments (in line with Civil Service rates) for the refeering team of 5. I can see the dichotomy (I think) and can sympathise with your predicament. Am I right in thinking that it's going to penalise clubs to the benefit of the officials?
It looks as though you are personally losing €20 per game, but your umpires are set to gain almost that each.
I can empathise with the related expenses of sporting children (Happened you had bought the MUFC gansey for the young lad you would be saving a few shekels) but as the oul' lad once said "dipped wicks require paraffin" or words to that effect.
On an aside note....The Talbot Hotel in Wexford town....3 nights B&B, 3 evening dinners and leisure facilities "for 2 fogies" €198....Y/N.

Re: Could be a very Short Summer
Talbot will let you know about later.
2011 Refs countrywide were getting fixed fees 30, 40, 50 etc whatever.
Under new proposed scheme
You fill in a travel and subsistence form with te follow details
name, address, match , venue, date and time
List of umpires - so they can claim
method of transport and vechile reg number.
Claim part
A - travel expenses at 50c a mile
B (i)-Subsistence Claim for a period of less than 10 hours you are entitled to €13.71
because a claim/expense not a fixed fee
Please note you have to tick the box to claim
or
(ii)
Attach Meal receipt *valid receipt must be supplied
"An offical may claim for a subsistence allowance or a receipted mealfor himself and his umpires but not both" direct quote
Subject to a Max claim (which was set at €40 but has since been removed due to lady in croker a certain Miss Slattery and aboyo called T.Ryan -two accountants not having a f**king clue).
Let Max = €40 .
Offical team for a league match =€200 instead of €40. Fecking break club.
Usual thing always did with umpires
xmas pressie of what tipple they liked
Bring out for a session one a year
Bring for meal once a year, twice if got a county final.
General pint or two after some games during year.- now croker had taken a few more nights out from us getting hard to come up with an excuse to get out now!!

Re: Could be a very Short Summer
I know T Ryan ....
The PS mileage and sub rates are antiquated and should not be used by the GAA nor accepted by refs etc. They were reduced by 25% a couple of years ago and in the interim petrol has gone up about 75%. A bad model to use.
Mind you for all the good a lot of umpires have been in recent years at big games you could buy a couple of mannequins (shop dummies for those without the odd focal) and stand them beside the posts .... they'd be equally as effective.
(Boxty should be able to source these cheaply)

Re: Could be a very Short Summer
Referees expenses issue is the real payments problemGames will go on whether managers are paid over the odds or not, but the uneasy peace with referees is a greater worry, writes Colm Keys
Quoting from the article .....
.................... One individual closely aligned to refereeing in Wexford underlined the level of belligerence there may be over this matter if it not resolved satisfactorily.
"If you thought the grey protest was bad a few years ago, wait until you see this," he declared to the Irish Independent. ..............................
It seems that Jim is being closely advised by Boxty in this matter .....
