Half Xmas!
In a bid to lift the morose mood in this country I am suggesting the inception of the Half Christmas Holiday! For one day only - the nearest Saturday to the longest day on June 21st, we will all celebrate Xmas again but this time Australian style - in the middle of Summer!
Decorations will be limited to just a tree in each houshold. Presents will be restricted to one per person and NOT exceeding €50 in value. Children will be told that this is Santa's evil half brother who has now found the Lord and in true Xmas commercial style is trying to undercut his half-sibling by piggy-backing the Festive spirit at a warmer time of year.
Turkey and goose and all trimmings can be cooked alfresco - turkey in BBQ sauce - could be a big hit. It will be an excuse to load up the beer cellar, the wine rack and the spirits cabinet. Yoou can catch up with family and people you want to avoid again - but at least it should be easier outdoors! Retail outlets will get an unexpected mid year bonus and everyone will be in better form. Broadcasters will be allowed to play the staples such as Fairytale of New York for just the one day.
Its a no-brainer! Bring on Half-Xmas - the rest of the world will follow!!! Any other suggestions or improvements welcome before a Green Paper is presented. Lets start a twitter and FB campaign!

Re: Half Xmas!
Better still we might be able to get a famous drink manufacturer to sponsor this! We could ask them to move their annual day back from September and in return we could rename the feast ..... Arthur Christmas!

I think it would be a far better idea to move Festivus from the 23rd of December to the middle of summer

FFS are you delusional? Forum soccerball EXPERT, The Puke, has informed me that day/week coincides with ROI's first involvement in a major soccerball final...Varying counties are out the same day in what I'd call "Die dog or sh1te the license" affairs..
It's also the height of the hay-making season, where poor dumb animals trust their keepers to look after them come winter...
Fook me, I've heard some daft ones but this crock bates Banagher and Banagher takes batin'....

Re: Half Xmas!
I myself am a rural urbanite - so not in tune with the exact timings of the various agri workstreams
however I would have thought that late June was the height of hay making season.
Was there not an expression down Tipperary direction that was used to gauge the success of early summer.

I am all to familiar as a tax payer ... The poor farmer .... no taxes, student grants for the kids and all manner of grants for themselves ... self sufficient. Amazing how quiet the IFA etc have become during the last 2/3 years ... shhh lads keep it quiet - lest we be asked to help the national problem ...

I have no desire to lecture you, being a newbie and all, but if I could point you to the errant interpretation that you seem to hold of rural Ireland....The agri-sector are the greatest contributor to the State...

Perhaps you could explain how they are the greatest contributor? Stats would be handy. A breakdown of revenue generated from the farming community would be interesting - as would figures for grant aid ... and small farmers dole .. subventions etc. As far as I am aware the tax take from farmers (big and small) is in the very low (ie non existent) area.

Re: Half Xmas!
I read the papers alright. Rural Ireland is indeed thriving and the lack of protests, moaning and usual 'poor me' syndrome is notably absent as they watch 'official Ireland' getting screwed and caught at every turn. Gone very quiet they are alright - in their hour of boom - lest they be asked to do something they have never done .... contibute.
