GAAMAD
I think you are wrong on this
"They would not listen / They're not listening still " - seems more like VB to me
though to be fair I was always puzzled about "are soothed beneath the artist's loving hand"
Another thought is maybe its about Vinny Murphy and the 1992 Dublin team "weathered faces lined in pain"

Re: Song Titles that don't appear in lyrics ...
In yet another weird and freakish occurrence when discussing old songs on GT - I heard this tune (Vincent) on the radio this afternoon. I was also going to post earlier about Donegal's Sam win referring to Talking Heads Once in a Lifetime - I didn't post but the song appeared on the radio later today too - well not appeared but got played - doh! Still .... A few weeks back we were discussing Wuthering Heights and yes - I read the book that night - nah - it too got played.
Which leads me to consider the following (with the % chance of each possibility given after) ...
All radio DJs are avid GT readers (1%)
Jayo has ESP andMaureen Harry Potter type powers and can unwittingly send microwave signals to radio stations all over the country when ruminating on ditties old and new. This subliminal messaging results in the DJ playing the song. Now that I think of it Amhrán na bhFiann used to come into my head at around 11.50pm every night and just before I switched of Teilifís a hAon, lo and behold!!!! ..... (99%).
ps On a more sad note for all you Night Owls I hear poor Gerry Rafferty has gone to the great hit factory in the sky today. He unfortunately died of liver failure so perhaps he never did give up the booze or the one night stands! But he made Baker St more popular than even Sherlock Holmes!
