Winning titles
Being from a county who really hasn't had much success with cups recently except for the league I always wonder this, Do people from the likes of Kerry and Kilkenny have the same excitement as a team like Derry for example? I know an All Ireland is an All Ireland but every year they always seem to be in the final or winning it. I could imagine if a county like Derry or even Antrim got into the All Ireland semi finals it would be like winning an All Ireland for their fans, It seems to me that Kerry and Kilkenny are used to winning and maybe they dont get the same level of enjoyment of winning? Do you still get the same level of enjoyment as people from other counties?? Or do you kind of get used to it. Its almost as if a win for teams like Kerry or Kilkenny are just normal, Where as a win to me is like winning the lotto
You may not get it the way I want to put this across.
Thanks, Órlaith x

Re: Winning titles
The aforementioned counties continue to succeed because it has become habitual to their followers. Elderly sages in these counties spend winter's nights pondering on whether Dara O'Sé was better than Jacko, who may have been better or lesser than O'Connell, who might have been superior to Paddy Kennedy.
The situation is similar in Kilkenny. Is Shefflin better than Carey, or was Keher the best "Cat" ever. Then someone throws in Clohessy or Lory Meagher and the debate takes fire.
Younger tigers wonder might their names one day be mentioned amongst this pantheon of greats and thus strive might and main to emulate these legends.
Round here the winter topics are frost, fodder and the ISEQ index....

Re: Winning titles
It takes barren years in order to have a real hunger for success. When Leitrim won the Connacht Championship in 1994 the outpouring of emotion was unbelievable. The buzz around the county was unreal.
The pubs were packed most nights for the 3 weeks up until the semi- final. People who had never seen a football match were talikng about nothing else.
Every single house had flags and bunting.
I even remember one eejit on the radio calling for the army to be brought in to guard the county in case there was houses robbed while the whole lot of us were in Dublin for the weekend.
Somehow I don't think there would be quite the same hysteria in successful counties.

True that. LMFM, which is the local radio station for Louth and Meath, has gone gaga. The main news headline on one of the bulletins last week was about who the referee for the final might be!

Re: Winning titles
There will be some buzz in Drogheda at the weekend. I hope they let the Louth fans into the pubs .... Have a fancy for the Wee County here. I reckon they will dominate midfield and have some very good forwards. It may be decided by how they hold the Meath front 6 - presumably better than Dublin. Could be a high scoring game.

Re: Winning titles
I think the buzz round the Leinster and Connaught Finals this year is brilliant, Leinster particularly after Dublins dominance for the last 5 years has been ended and the fact there will be a definate different winner, and they could be from the wee county!!!
1st time winners and wins that end a trophyless era are always the best, trust me i know, after all i am from a county who bangs on about 1993 like England do about 1966!!! Saying that, you have to admire Kilkenny and Kerry for their hunger to continue winning, surely it would be easier to take the foot off the pedal but they refuse to do so..........the feckers!
