Most famous GAA player?
Was just thinking of lads who had good intercounty GAA careers and went on to have successful 'work' careers. So the thread is not just about the most famous player for GAA deeds but also off-field endeavours.
I suppose the most well known may be Jack Lynch, the pipe smoking Cork man and it'd be hard to beat his record.
An all time GAA legend at half back in hurling and midfield in football. In hurling he won minor honours before going on to win 8 county titles in a row for Glen Rovers, and then a further 3 in a row. He won back to back minor football titles with St Nicholas, an Inter and two seniors before adding a Dublin medal with Civil Service. In 1939 he became the only player in history to captain the county hurling and football teams. Jack won 6 Munsters and 5 Liams as well as 2 Munster footballs and one Sam. He won a place on both the Hurling Teams of the Century and the Millennium.
He served as a TD for 33 years unbroken, held numerous Ministries and was Taoiseach for nearly 9 years. Some going that!

Hardly, shure they were only footballers and only middling ones at that...I thought from the content outlined in your opening post you were looking for nominees with a list of achievements, aside from knocking over handy frees....
The man himself has a resume that makes Jack Lynch appear Biffo-esque....
Hurler, footballer, musician, academic......I'll let himself explain....

Good God no m! I was down there overnight a short while back and it Patrick St was full of young lads with souped up Toyota Starlets and no doubt small ... langers. A late arrival meant a few quick bevs in the bar in Old Jurys before retiring and I tell ya there was more life in Boxtys underwear it was that dead ...

She's taken to putting said underwear into the washing machine on it's own lately and watching it spin around for hours.....
It's the only time she sees any movement in it these days, she says....

Re: Most famous GAA player?
The late Dermot Earley is up there with the best of them. Only the Celtic Cross eluded him in a long and distinguished career, marked by wonderful feats of skills, exemplary leadership and unblemished sportsmanship...He followed up with spells at management with Roscommon and Kildare, where he always gave his all.
A successful career with the army saw him rise to the pinnacle as Chief of Staff after spells of service overseas, where he proved a credit to the country.
He combined sports with an outstanding career and in between managed to raise a fine family who have proven themselves to be cut from the same cloth as the man himself. This was never more exemplified than when on the day of his fathers funeral, Dermot Jnr. lined out for Kildare...
While Roscommon may not be anyone's favourites west of the great river, the name of Dermot Earley is respected with the status it deserves in the realms of Connacht football.

Seamus Keevans.
An peileadoir, Mr football as he was known as.
The only man to represent and play for a county in each province at senior championship level, Sligo, Cavan, Wexford and Waterford.
7 senior medals in the above (bar sligo) Senior hurling medal in Waterford.
represented Sligo in minor hurling and senior hurling in a connaught final
won a league medal (senior) in Wexford at 49/50 years of age.
Gave over 50 years to An Garda.
Revitalised Wexford Camoige and had a direct bearing on Wexfords resurgence in the 60's
Changed the landscape of Colleges football by introducing secondary competitions for the VEC's and other schools not able to compete at senior level.
Set up the Leinster minor football league which was revived after a lapse last year.
Every Sat morning was always there for kids aged between 4 and 8/9 in local pitch.
Set up and got football going nearly single handled in Wexford, Jim Byrne competition (minor), Kent Stainless (U10) in this competition every team got to a final and all kids got a medal he was doing this 15/20 years before it was "normal practice".
Legend in his own right and like Mr Early all that eluded him was a Celtic Cross.

Believe it or not Puke there are two almost along side each other in Drogheda - they obviously like to honour their sports heroes while they are alive to enjoy it! One is for famous handballer Joey Maher and the other for boxer Tony 'Socks' Byrne who carried the Irish flag and won a bronze medal in the 56 Olympics in Melbourne. Only for a few local businesses throwing in about £700 he may not have even gone to Oz!
