The League Cup
Is this trophy seriously devalued since its heyday of Notts Forest, Liverpool, Man city and memorably QPR winning it, the game that made the competition.
Alas with all of the money now concentrated in the premiership, the big clubs and the smaller clubs in that league totally disregard the tournament.
Already after just one round all of the big premiership teams are gone, leaving a totally devalued tournament.
OK it provides a trophy to some mediocre team which might keep their success starved fans happy, but is it not time oit was put to sleep?
The ghosts of Rodney Marsh, andy gray, Dennis Tuart and don Rodgers are uneasy with the current farce.

Re: The League Cup
All of the big Premiership teams are gone?? Where are you getting your info... United and Arsenal are still there Pat. And Tottenham are gone because they lost to Arsenal. So really the only big team that showed they don't care about this competition was Chelsea.
Michael Owen managed 2 against Scunthorpe. I always claimed he was twice the player Robinho was at least now I have the stats to prove it.

Re: The League Cup
Even Leeds didn't take it seriously.
I was just thinking about this earlier - I hope Carling are not paying too much sponsorship. United will no doubt take it very seriously as it is their best chance of winning anything this season. Just like last season really. They will no doubt be hoping that Arsenal draw one of the giants like Northampton or Brentford and get dumped out!

Man United won it in 2009, the year they also reached the Champions League final. Liverpool got to the final the year they won the Champions League in 05 and Chelsea got to the final when they appeared in the 08 Champions League final also. The last small team to win the cup was Boro in 2004. All this would suggest that the big teams do like to succeed in this competition, if only just to blood players.

Re: The League Cup
The team Arsenal put out against Tottenham would suggest they are only using the really promising players like Gibbs, Lansbury and Wilshere, in the past the entire team was made up of youth players.

Shame on you. I know it is Mickey Mouse but you really should remember who the holders are.

Re: The League Cup
Mind you, if Man City spend another 600 million they could win this, as 800 million seems to be the going rate to guarantee success in this competition.

Re: The League Cup
"Big teams win big trophies" Therefore this United team are the ONLY big team in England. According to you patrique..
I however have not succumbed to the Sky Sports, Mickey Harte, only the biggest trophy is worth winning, mentality like you have, so I am willing to give that label to most teams that play in the Champions league on a regular basis.
Man United's 800 Million in debt wasn't anything to do with buying players or wages. United's earning through success more than pay for that.
That may be confusing to you patrique as numbers aren't your strong point (as evidenced by your 800 million comment) but in simpler terms: United will be still be a big club long after Sheik Mansour tires of his Man City plaything.

Yes and Danny Wilson and Kingsley Black (remember him!) were also on that Luton team and Ashley Grimes was a sub. It was 1988 and they beat Arsenal 3-2. Amazingly all 11 Arsenal players and their sub were English!!! How times have changed!

Just for you Boc! He got 6 out of 7 - but not the best goal - that was Andy Ritchie's! Love the comment from Alan Parry that it was something to tell his grand-parents about!
Interesting to see the Oldham number 2 - a Cork lad who went on to bigger things.

Re: The League Cup
Nobody sets out their stall at the start of the season to win it, but once it gets to the quarter or semi final tage people take it more seriously. Anything a club win is worth winning.
Personally I can't wait for the final tomorrow.
It's live on Setanta Sports.
Come on The Bit O' Red.
Also well done to Monagha for making their first final. It's nice to see them doing well in the first division too especially considering they have gates of only 200-300.

Milligan got one cap I think. The winger Ricky Holden was English - went on to Man City for 50.00 (before they had money!) and back to Oldham.
