Re: Football Championship - Team of the Year "So Far"
The best TYRONE full back I have seen in the last ten years is Brian Dooher. Honestly, he has cleared more ball than anyone I can remember.
Penrose is starting to look good in that position too.
I cannot see either Mcmahon making many sides in Ireland as no other side plays a sweeper. Now obviously having two full backs is better than one, and having 14 is better than one, so perhaps we get an optical illusion that McMahon, whichever of them is the designated full back, is playing well.
In all honesty, which one is "supposed" to be full back? Is it Joe, the number 12 who plays full back, or is it the number 3 Justin, who appears to play right half/right back?
I laughed last sunday when the Tribune was going on about the snail pace of the Tyrone full back line. Little do they know I thought. They are probably still thinking ,like Tony Davis, in terms of players having positions.

Admitted last year to not having watched a Premier League game in years yet still gave detailed analysis on Man United games and PL players in general. Makes you wonder on what basis does he compare Tommy McGuigan to Neil Lennon..
Stay tuned for Patrique to avoid the issue!
Brian McGuigan. King of the 5 yard cross field pass.
Do you remember Ray Wilkins? If the goal posts had been on the side of the pich on the half way line....................

Good call JS.
He is too busy peddling similar nonsense on Jayo's 'systems & styles' thread, claiming that Colm McCullough played in front of his full-back line in 2008. McCullough was actually our 3rd most advanced player in almost every game that year, playing as CHF, just off Cavanagh & Penrose. In the final, he switched with Penrose and played corner forward.
But never let the facts get in the way of a good yarn, eh Pat?
McCullough received at least ten short kick outs in one game. Yes he was maybe on the 45, but the 45 in his own half, not the attacking half. But he was not at centre half, because he was on the wing, right half position.
But hey, the lad has talent as a forward, but nothing special more than the average county player.

mugsys_barber wrote:Rather than go down the route of taking Patrique to task about his issues with the current Tyrone team I would like to take this oppertunity to highlight one of Patriques' most favourite of players Kevin McGourty who is apparently the best midfielder in Ireland and maybe even the world .
I often wondered how good this guy really was until I got a glimpse of him with my own two eyes at Casement park in May. His first two contributions to this years championship were to firstly come out on the wrong side of a kickout with the collossal Brian Dooher who plucked the size 5 out of the sky much to the bewilderment of the egotistic McGourty.
His second contribution involved him trying a crazy Holywood pass over all of forty odd yards that was driven directly into the waiting arms of Brian Dooher again who hadn't even anyone within 10 yards of him at that particular time.
Mickey Harte then done the honourable thing and just took Dooher off to give the lad a chance. Ricey McMenamin was also called ashore so that the loyal to the cause brother CJ could get a kick of 'er as well
Hmmmmm. So I was right about Brian McGuigan all along.
Thanks Mugsy, glad someone has seen the light.
You did see the Down game?

And lads, Kevin McGourty is the best centre half forward.
He only looked the best mid fielder because it was Tyrone and Donaghy has retired.
This thread is a bit like Tyrone football. Patrique the quality poster with a swarm of Tyrone posters buzzing around with puke comments.

Re: Football Championship - Team of the Year "So Far"
Kevin Mcgourty the best centre half in the country?? Seriously P your having a giraffe.
McGuigan has been the best quarterback of this past decade regardless of the serious career threatening injuries that he has had to overcome. McGourty's only injury would have been to his ego that has kept him out of football for quite a number of years by choice.
I actually didn't attend the Down game lad as I was in Majorca and watched the match on television which is probably were you view 99.9% of football games by the sound of things.

Lads, Canavan genius, O'Neill had the makings of a great, Dooher I love, Cavlan yes, Ricey as a "normal" right half as goiod as John Rainey, but I never, ever, could se what Brian McGuigan was supposed to have. Both McEntees were better centre half forwards in my opinion, before i even look elsewhere.
As I keep saying he reminds me of ME, minus the goal scoring threat.

Fair play to you Pat, I take it ME is a reference to one of the all time great quarter backs Mr Elway of the Denver Bronco's. What A Player. I mean, what A player and what a complement, especially coming from yourself and all
I suppose if Brian had been brought up in his country of birth the Giants or the Jets may have benefitted from his vision, speed of thought and ability to thread passes through the eye of a needle. One of the biggest travesty's of all time i suppose was the failure of the panel of "experts" not to have awarded Brian an All star in 2005. An issue that his legendary father the often has an axe to grind about.
I suppose you could argue that he hasn't scored as many classic goals as experts in the form of O'Neill, the Cavanagh's, McCullagh, Canavan or the Mugsy but I would have fond memories of the clinkers he scored against Laois in the '03 national league final, the 04 McKenna cup final against Donegal prior to the untimely death of Cormac and also against Galway in the qualifiers in the same year. You probably never seen them as those games may not have been televised by the good old BBC.

Alas you took my mention of goal scoring threat as a criticism of McGuigan, whereas the reality is that I scored goals in large quantities, compared to many players, including McGuigan.
Quarter backs are play makers. There have been many playmakers in Gaelic football but the first quarter back type was trevor Giles of Meath who literally made all the plays, took all the free kicks, and was always on the ball. If McGuigan was a quarter back he was the type who had one move, the one yard hand off to the real play maker, the running back, the wonderful Brian Dooher who has been Tyrone's play maker for years, and still is.
I have seen Blaney, McHugh, Sean O'Neill, Ciaran McDonald, Ogie, Hanahoe and many others.
I simply believe that Brian McGuigan's role in the Tyrone machine was to do the easy thing, keep the move alive, recycle the ball.
To me, that is not special, but hey, I don't have say Roy Keane in the top 20 IRISH soccer players I saw.
Depends what you like. I like players who can do something I couldn't. Brian wasn't one of those.

If this is all above your "red top" level RM do not contribute. Saying nothing as an argument is wonderful. I suspect your next post will be "put the kettle on".

Re: Football Championship - Team of the Year "So Far"
By the way Mugsy All Stars are picked by journalists, and I cannot think of too many experts there.
Put it this way, in 1994 Brian Whelehan won hurler of the year but not an all star.
And of course all Stars are for two games a year, for the most part.

Yeah, that's it all right Paddy. It's above my level and I'm feeling a bit left out.
I honestly wish you would **** off back to HS at this stage where you'll find posters of a similar leaning as yourself and leave us red-toppers here to pretend we know what we're talking about.
