Football Championship - Team of the Year "So Far"
Pascal McConnell
Charlie Harrison Justing McMahon Joe McMahon
Tomas O'Se Michael Shields Philip Jordan
John Galvin Paddy Keenan
Paul Galvin Padraic Joyce Joe Sheridan
Colm Cooper Bernard Brogan David Kelly
Few questionable ones there, least of all Joe Sheridan as a left half-forward. He'll be doing well to retain his place for the Quarter Final. Joe McMahon in at corner back, again thats debateable. Think Tomas O'Se gets a sympathy AllStar. My team as follows:
Brendan Murphy
Charlie Harrison Kevin Reilly Ross Donovan
Paudie Kissane Mike McCarthy Joe McMahon
John Galvin Paddy Keenan
Paul Galvin Padraic Joyce Graham Reilly
Colm Cooper Bernard Brogan Donie Shine

Why Galvin Loyal?- he has spent more time on the bench than he has on the pitch, granted his introductions have turned games on their heads but i would have thought Finlay or Costello were more deserving of a place.

What made me laugh last night was Liam Mc Hale claiming that MacAuley from Dublin was the best midfielder he had seen all year - what drugs is that man taking, he's not even the best midfielder in Dublin FFS. He's a cocky sort of a lad by the looks of it

Re: Football Championship - Team of the Year "So Far"
The only reason I would disagree with Galvin is on the basis that other players have had more game time than him but to be fair, few have been as influential as him.
Cannot disagree with Sheridan, he has being doing very well this season.
Even though a lot of his scores have come from play and against - at times - weaker opposition, Donie Shine's tally to date of 1-26 is not to be sneezed at, thought he could've got a look in.
Usual bullsh*t from lazy pundits putting so many Tyrone players in - this from the same pundits who were writing off Tyrone saying they were past it?
Rightly or wrongly, the All Stars are usually picked from the semi-finalists with a token one or two from provincial winners.

No, I'm not disputing them being there but the same pundits that were dismissing Tyrone before yesterdays game are the same pundits that put them into the team of the year so far.

Re: Football Championship - Team of the Year "So Far"
As I keep saying, you either have 15 from Tyrone or none.
Well on paper, the way Gaelic football used to be before sweepers and such, the only two from Tyrone's starting 15 who would be considered would be Cavanagh and Jordan.
I mean can you imagine eithr McMahon or Penrose getting on for anyone else? But with Tyrone and the "system", super stars.
And that is what we all keep forgetting. On paper Tyrone, no forward line, slowest full back line in Ireland, look useless.
However if you have 15 in the full back line, and 14 forwards, well that's different.
Suddenly those water carriers are important to the system.
So....we pick them all or probably none of them.

There has only been one important tie(2 games) in the championship so far. Cork v Kerry with the winners ensuring that they avoid Tyrone before the final. As Loyal states correctly elsewhere this is more important for Kerry that Cork as once the knockout games go according to form Kerry will feel that at worst the get Tyrone in the final at best Cork. So Galvins cameos to turn both games were the only important contributions in the championship to date -
so that leaves him as player of the year so far by a country mile.

Quite probably, the worst piece of analysis I've read on here for a long time, but worth highlighting as an example of how bizarely some people view football matches.
For years now, Patrique has maintained that Tyrone have average footballers (at best), who would struggle to make most other county sides, yet they have a magical system that has allowed them to win 3 all-irelands in 7 years, and 3 of the last 4 Ulster titles.
So what is this system? To my eyes, it is no different than that employed by most sides in Ireland at present, but Patrique, with his all-knowing wisdom, sees it as something more phemonenal. Patrique would have us believe that Tyrone men are virtual supermen, all 15 capable of appearing in both the full-back and full-forward lines almost simultaneously. What amazing athletes we must have, to cover 160 yds so quickly, and no wonder that other sides, with supposedly superior footballers, aren't able to compete with such a trick.
Patrique says that neither McMahon would make any other side in the country. This statement, of course, includes Justin McMahon, who is perhaps the best full-back in Ireland (Tony Davis rated him in the top 2-3 on Sunday night), and his brother, whose size, skills and footballing brain make him perhaps the most versatile player in the country. Penrose is not as good as either of the Omagh men, but there are few sides that he wouldn't make.
I know that Patrique has a decent knowledge of the history of gaelic sports, but ridiculous posts like that suggest that his knowledge does not extend to analysing games & sides. Perhaps it was a wind-up, but it he has repeated it so often and for so long, and I'm now convinced that Patrique actually does think that the Tyrone team of the last decade were/are a bunch of journeymen, who hit upon some magical style of play that no-one else has yet discovered.
Patrique, it's time to dispense with the bland, sweeping generalisations, and actually watch some football.

Re: Football Championship - Team of the Year "So Far"
TC - Patrique's opinion of the two Mc Mahons summed it up for me, there is not a team in the country them 2 lads wouldn't walk onto and i include Kerry and Cork in that, Justin gets all the plaudits but Joe is the man who does all the donkey work for the team - he has a supreme footballing brain and is a great reader of the game, one of the most composed footballers on the ball and can move to when the need arises.
There aren't too many teams in the country Penrose wouldn't get on to either.

Re: Football Championship - Team of the Year "So Far"
I agree totally with that Boc. The McMahons are exceptionally good footballers. Ironically, Patrique constantly raves about Jordan who, very fine player that he is, does not have the technical skills that either Justy or Joey have (passing, shooting, catching).
2 super footballers, and massively important to Tyrone. To say that no other side would want them is beyond ridicule, and genuinely makes me doubt that Patrique actually watches much football at all.

Admitted last year to not having watched a Premier League game in years yet still gave detailed analysis on Man United games and PL players in general. Makes you wonder on what basis does he compare Tommy McGuigan to Neil Lennon..
Stay tuned for Patrique to avoid the issue!

Good call JS.
He is too busy peddling similar nonsense on Jayo's 'systems & styles' thread, claiming that Colm McCullough played in front of his full-back line in 2008. McCullough was actually our 3rd most advanced player in almost every game that year, playing as CHF, just off Cavanagh & Penrose. In the final, he switched with Penrose and played corner forward.
But never let the facts get in the way of a good yarn, eh Pat?

Re: Football Championship - Team of the Year "So Far"
Rather than go down the route of taking Patrique to task about his issues with the current Tyrone team I would like to take this oppertunity to highlight one of Patriques' most favourite of players Kevin McGourty who is apparently the best midfielder in Ireland and maybe even the world .
I often wondered how good this guy really was until I got a glimpse of him with my own two eyes at Casement park in May. His first two contributions to this years championship were to firstly come out on the wrong side of a kickout with the collossal Brian Dooher who plucked the size 5 out of the sky much to the bewilderment of the egotistic McGourty.
His second contribution involved him trying a crazy Holywood pass over all of forty odd yards that was driven directly into the waiting arms of Brian Dooher again who hadn't even anyone within 10 yards of him at that particular time.
Mickey Harte then done the honourable thing and just took Dooher off to give the lad a chance. Ricey McMenamin was also called ashore so that the loyal to the cause brother CJ could get a kick of 'er as well
