US Open
5 under after two holes in the third round, opening with two birdies.
He couldn't, could he?

Re: US Open
Long, long way to go on a course like that but, then again, isn't he from the sea-side, so should feel right at home. Always liked McDowell, and would love to see him do it.

He is from Portrush, overlooking Boston if you look to the left, hence his accent.
I see some bloke called Woods threatening........

By that rationale he should have an Insihowen accent Greencastle/Moville

Re: US Open
Just back from playing music, he is still there.
If he pulls this off it will be a bigger shock thann fgalway managing a draw with 14 man Offaly.
Go on Grahame.

I don't drink, not since August 1990, when Barr scored a screamer against Cork in the semi in an otherwise disappointing game, what I remember of it.

Yeeeeeeoooooooooowwwwwwwwwwww.
First Irishman EVER to be in contention for this and WINS it. OK padraig had a shot a few years ago but only because Mickelson and Monty blew it.
What a guy.
Antrim ruling the world. McDowell, Barnes at the boxing, and the 2nd or 3rd best hurling team in Leinster after the Cats and Offaly.

Outstanding achievement by Graeme, winning the US Open on the toughest golf course in the world.
Well up on any list of greatest ever Irish sporting achievements.

Re: US Open
Fantastic win - As TC on such a difficult course - in windy conditions with the heavyweights in chase - Wonderful composure - Usually golfers need to "lose a few" majors before they win one.
Had the pleasure of playing with him in a Pro-am about three years back
- Very likeable lad once you get over the accent - he joined in the banter the whole way round and joined us for a beer afterwards and gave plenty of tips and comments.
Ive played in a few of these and many pros give you a nod on the first tee and spend the rest of the day talking to their caddy

On the contrary I got both rounds - Chubby and those nice people at ISM were paying for the bar though.

This is golf your talking about here, right?
What did he achieve exactly? He walked around for a few hours a few days trying to hit a ball, you'd see more skill in junior B camogie in Mayo. His poor caddy carrying the bag for him the whole time achieved more I'd say.

Re: US Open
Well, in terms of number of participants, golf is one of the biggest sports in the world. In terms of money, it is also on of the richest, making it both extremely popular and extremely high profile.
Id've thought an Irishman winning one of the 4 major titles, and only the second to do so in 60 years, would have been well up there.
Definitely must be on any top 10 list of international Irish sporting achievements, in my opinion top 5.

Ah now Bags, this is a thread for celebration, not begrudgery. If you don't class golf as a sport, you must have a pretty narrow definition of the word.

Fair play to McDowell TC, Golf means nothing to me but I respect that it clearly does to others.
Racehorses and hurlers would fill most of my 'great Irish sporting achievement lists' but funnily enough some people think that is strange.

Racehorses? Years of breeding and millions of pounds spent? Hardly a fair show is it?
I always love the fact that Ireland's only olympic gold recently and then the HORSE failed a drug test.
Only in Ireland.
