Mind you if he's anywhere near decent then Freddie Roach won't let him near Khan! Joke.
Hope he makes it.
Joke? Freddy won't let ME anywhere near Khan. The only top 500 fighter he met he lost in 30 seconds.

Re: Irish Boxers
Patrique, I said joke because I think we're about to see what Amir Khan is really made of in the next twelve months or so. I'd say within the next fight or two Roach will have to let Khan sink or swim. No denying that he's been matched nicely by Roach, the Malignaggi fight was a dead cert win for Kahn but what boxer isn't if it's possible. However if he really wants to sweep his division then he's just about out of easy fights. I'd say one more for the money and then it's serious. Marcos Maidana, Devon Alexander of Timothy Bradley, no hiding places there.
As suspect as Khan's chin is he's very quick and an imposing presence at his weight, plus he's got a great trainer in th corner too. I think he'll be up to the task but it's a tough divsion so there may be lows as well as highs but I think he'll come out of it at the end with much more credit than he gets at the moment.
Cue first round knockout against his next oponent now I've written all of that

The "nordie" won gold, proving yet again that Belfast men are the toughest in Ireland.

Hopefully he does step it up, he should be fighting Maidana next, he's dodged him once. It's a stylistic nightmare for Khan, but Freddie's a genius, he had Chavez Jr looking half decent last weekend. He'll have a gameplan in place, and Khan has some decent skills to work with, he is quick and pretty big even at 140.

My god, I don't know which is more of an embarassment. Our boxers or our rugby players. RTE did some job to sell this fight.
Looks like we'll have to live off our 13 winners at Cheltenham for at least a week.

Re: Irish Boxers
I never heard of Willie Casey until half an hour ago.
I then discovered that RTE on the computer were showing this live all over the world, even N.Ireland.
i just clicked in, fight over.
Now when I say I never heard of Willie Casey it sums up boxing. Was a time when I would have walked mastermind if boxing had been allowed as a specialist subject, as I could name all the world champs in the glove era, from 1960 something.
Then we began to get 15 champions at every weight and I lost interest. Once Britain, who never had a real heavyweight champ in 100 years suddenly had 13 in 5 years I knew the jig was up. Johnny Nelson, Joe Bugner, somebody Hide......it was embarrassing.
Mind you, give him his due, Joe Bugner would probably still beat that bloke Hayes, in about two rounds. and at his peak we didn't rate Joe, well not compared to Ali, frazier, Foreman, Norton, Liston......

The only thing Ireland have lost to GB recently was the racing at Cheltenham.
Obviously they have more Kings than us so it is to be expected.

It was from the patrique school of prediction. You just claim to have won money or made the prediction before the event, then recount the event and bingo. Classic example in 6 nations thread.

A few things to ponder.
In Irish SPORTING circles we love English rugby, because in the dark days of the early 1970s, when we had a team good enough to win a slam, they were the ONLY team who would travel to Dublin. Wales and Scotland both cried off, and indeed England travelled twice in the one year to help with the cause of Irish sport. Once a boycott started in one sport, it would have spread. That is why we like England.
Having said that we need to stuff them tomorrow, and might have picked the team to do so. As Breffni pointed out Sexton destroyed them last year, Fitzgerald is not a full back, and Trimble has the size and bulk to combat Cueto.
I expect Ireland to win.

Patrique going to the trouble of copying predictions made elsewhere to save some face?? Puke taking you to the cleaners has obviously spurred you on to retain some semblance of self respect..
I only read the odd soccer related thread over there these days.. So really what you predicted was.. An Irish win.. At home.. Against England in the rugby.. Ireland always beat England in the rugby these days though so forgive me for not being overly impressed.
You were exposed as a spoofer when you wouldn't enter the Tipster I'm afraid.. I could name some of the hundreds of other predictions you made that didn't come within an asses roar of coming off but who would I be proving it to that doesn't already know it.
Kudos on the England winning prediction I guess it's true if you throw enough muck at a wall some of it will stick.. I hope you put money on it to make back what you lost on backing United to lose just once this season..

Re: Irish Boxers
Nice to see a Mayo sportsman with a bit of fight in him!! Well done Ray!!
Moylette wins European boxing gold in Turkey
Ray Moylette has won light-welterweight gold at boxing's European Continental Championships in Ankara, Turkey, with a superb win over England's Thomas Stalker.
Moylette fought a controlled and patient fight against Stalker, with the judges scoring the fight 18-10 overall, with the round scores at 5-5, 7-3, 6-2.
Joe Ward will fight for gold in the light-heavyweight division later this afternoon, against Russian light-heavyweight Nikita Ivanov.
St Anne's BC pugilist Moylette, fighting in the blue corner, emerged into a laser lightshow to the sound of Eye of the Tiger in Ankara, sporting a bruised right-eye.
There was nothing bruised about his first round performance though, as he tore into his English opponent.
Moylette lashed into Stalker from the bell and scored some early punches. However, Stalker came back strongly in the round, with his left jab proving troublesome.
Indeed, the Irish fighter had a two-score lead heading into the final minute, but Stalker landed two late lefts to tie the first round score at 5-5, as the bell sounded.
The second round saw Stalker start the brighter of the two 64kg boxers; however, despite his huff and puff the Englishman failed to make much inroads into Moylette's tight defensive stance.
A flurry of rights, followed by a powerful left hook saw Moylette move into the lead. Stalker kept in touch with a skilful two-hit combo - a left hook being the stand out punch.
Moylette always had the more energy of the two fighters and pushed himself further clear with a right hook, left jab. The judges weighted the round heavily in favour of Moylette, marking the card at 7-3. That left the Irishman leading 12-8 going into the final round.
Needing a strong final three minutes to overturn a four-point defecit, Stalker again started with ferocity. But the Englishman failed to land much of meaning early in the third, with Moylette instead picking off points on the counter-attack. A hefty left jab leaving Stalker visibly shaken.
Stalker came again and went for crucial scores, but failed to get them. A big missed right hook from Stalker allowed Moylette to claim a few more points before he finished the tie with two late scores from a left jab and an uppercut, the last point coming with 20 seconds on the clock. At that point, Moylette smelled blood and danced the dance, toying with Stalker, before the judges confirmed the colour of his medal.

Re: Irish Boxers
Gold number two!!! Great stuff!!!
Ward, coming into his fight with Ivanov as the major underdog, scored a surprise 20-12 overall win. The rounds tallied at 7-3, 8-3, 5-6, to give Ward glory.
The sound of Survivor's most famous tune echoed around the auditorium once more as Ward emerged for his light-heavyweight battle versus the Russian Ivanov.
Ward, with nothing to lose as the underdog, started with passion and commitment. Early lefts, followed by strong right hooks put Ivanov on the back foot from the outset.
The fight then slowed as both fighters seemed intent on scoping each other out before engaging for combat in earnest. But Ward continued the stronger of the two warriors, landing a right-left combo, before getting caught with a strong left.
Both boxers fought the round with open stances, indicating an open and high-scoring fight lay ahead.
The 25-year-old Russian attempted to use his experience to bully Ward in the ring, but it failed as the 17-year-old Irishman landed combos with 45 seconds and 25 seconds to go, pulling clear in the round.
A final right, then left hook at the bell ensured Ward was well clear as he headed to the corner. The judges marked the round 7-3 in Ireland's favour.
Ivanov seemed enraged by the scoring and stormed into the second round. But the Russian was wild with his punches and caught Ward below the belt early on. He was warned for the infringment as Ward caught his breath from the winding.
With the bout re-started Ward was pushed to the ropes by Ivanov and again the Russian caught his younger Irish opponent below the belt. This time the referee only gave Ivanov a stern talking to.
Ivanov eased off a little after the two successive warnings, allowing Ward to land a point to extend the lead. The Irish fighter's confidence soared as he stalked the ring and landed another fine score.
Ivanov attacked Ward's body and head to pull back scores, which were crucial to maintaining any challenge. However, some late left jabs put Ward back in control of the round. The card was marked 8-3 in Ward's favour; the 15-6 lead he therefore carried into the final round seemed insurmountable. And so it proved.
Ivanov looked a beaten fighter at the start of the third and hesitated on the attack. Ward sensed this delay from the Russian and wisely held-off, wasting some precious time on the clock.
With two minutes to go only a KO would suffice for Ivanov, but Ward was composed and avoided Ivanov's fast combination actions.
Much of the ferocity was gone from the fight before Ivanovic added some successive punches to move clear in the round. The Russian harried and hassled Ward but failed to land more than a few points, before left hooks to the head were exhanged.
Ivanovic continued with this line of attack and added a few more scores to his total. With 25 seconds left the fight began to peter out as Ivanov ran out of steam. This left Ward to dance his way around the canvas for those final few seconds, before the referee called a halt to the contest and Ward was officially awarded the win.
