Irish railways
Caught Nationwide tonight. It was about Irish railway lines in the West, Donegal and Sligo. A group of primary kids from Monasteraden put together a DVD on the Ballaghaderren to Kilfree line and its going like hot cakes - all over the world. A great effort and well worth a look - you'll find it on the RTE website at [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
The pieces on the other lines were very interesting too. Even if you're not a trainspotter!

Re: Irish railways
There's old disused railways everywhere around the country, some are great trails for rambling/hiking!

Saw it Monday night I think, dealing with the West Clare railway. Great work done there and a section of the line is up and running, passing through Moyasta. Great vintage footage on it. No sign of KIB man Mossy......

Fraid not, am on a work assignment in New York at the minute. Will have to watch it from that link when I get in from work.
I did a project on the railways when I was in secondary school, the country could have some unbelievable infrastructure if we made the effort.

Unfortunately no hotel this time. Was in the Clonmel Park for a week after Xmas, with the snow and ice the water was cut off on the Tuesday evening. Had to shower at the client's factory in the mornings.
We moved hotel on the Thurs morning, and the cheeky feckers still tried to charge us full price for the too waterless nights
Seems like the regular visitors weren't the only ones who go there to get screwed.
Over here for 3 months, and have an apartment in Battery Park City. A lovely view of Ground Zero from my bedroom window, which is a little wierd!
It's a hell of a lot fecking colder over here than it was at home at any stage over xmas.
It's strange though, there was about 8 inches of snow last night, and this morning all the trains and buses ran without disruption, traffic was normal and all businesses/schools were open as normal............

Re: Irish railways
The railway line from Athenry to Limerick is stupid. In the winter time it gets flooded and has to be closed.

Funny enough the song about the fields of Athenry talks about a ship and a harbour and yet its landlocked.

Re: Irish railways
Loads of dissused railway embankments, huge viaduct bridges around Armagh town. Just outside Armagh town was the scene of one of the worst (maybe the worst)railway diasters this country has seen. 78 people killed in 1889. My uncle has a tile factory in the old railway station, only original front wall still standing (had to be kept as listed), my local is called the railway bar which sits on railway street opposite another bar called platform 1.

Re: Irish railways
If Irish Rail is to take off they need to drop their prices. You can get a city link bus to Dublin for €2 if you book well in advance compared to €18-40 for the train. Most expensive bus journey is about €16 compared to €40 for train. Once saw a train leaving for Dublin on a friday evening and I'd say there were about 15 people on it.

I have read about that one. A lot of kids on board on a Sunday outing were killed. I think it still is the biggest loss of life.
Though I shudder to think what might have happened had the Belfast Express been passing over the Malahide Viaduct last August at 70mph.

unbelievable what happened at Malahide and very fortunate that nobody got hurt.
Think it was actually more killed outside Armagh. Yeah it was mainly protestant kids on Sunday school outing. The train had too many carriages and could not get up a big hill, some bright spark thought it a good idea to unhook couple of carriages at back let them roll back gently and then get a push up from a train behind, carriages rolled back into oncoming train, i think that was the way of it. Long time since i read about it.
