Irish Boxers
Pound for pound and taking our population into account we must be near to the best boxing nation in the world - discuss.
ps Did ye see yer man that McCullagh beat doing a Paul Galvin when he lost? He won't be boxing again for a long time.

Have a look at this one minute in especially! Look at the judge's reaction - no shrinking violet!

Re: Irish Boxers
We have produced some wonderful boxers throughout the years alright, one such is on the title trail at the moment and is a good friend of mine, a lad Paul McCloskey from Dungiven.
Great fighter and one i would really love to see in a big title fight but as i told him when he decided to turn pro, he may have left it too late as hes round the 30 mark now!
How do you all rate his chances?

Re: Irish Boxers
Good thread Jayo.
The one country that immediately popped into my head when you put the question in terms of population was Puerto Rico.
They've got a population near the 4 million mark. I ran a quick check on Wikipedia and they've got 9 current World Champions and a pretty long list of former champions.
It'd be a good fight for the title though

Re: Irish Boxers
BE, I haven't seen McCloskey fight but he's in a good division for pay days if he can make it onto the World scene, Amir Khan in the future perhaps?
Mind you if he's anywhere near decent then Freddie Roach won't let him near Khan! Joke.
Hope he makes it.

BE I saw McCloskey fighting before the John Duddy/ Eastman bout at the Kings Hall in Decamber 07, I also went up to the Meadowbank arena in Magherafelt ( The largest and coldest indoor arena of its kind in Europe ) when he beat the spaniard Rasilla for the european title.
He's up this weekend against the italaian Guissepe Lauri in the King's hall. I admire his workrate, balance and abilty to read an opponent. His unorthodox south-paw style would be awkward for the likes of Khan down the line. He hasn't done much wrong up until now and it would be great to see someone from across the other side of the mountain doing well and hopefully some day we'll see him challenge for a world title.
I hear that Joe Brolly is a big mate of McCloskey as well BE, I saw him sitting at ringside in Widnes last March and his wee cousin Eoghan Quigg isn't a bad wee singer. It's not all doom and gloom in Derry after all...

RTÉ Television and RTÉ.ie will broadcast exclusive coverage of the five Irish boxers in their European Boxing Championship semi-final bouts in Moscow.
Ken Egan, Darren O'Neill, Tyrone McCullagh, Paddy Barnes and Eric Donovan have all qualified for the European semi-finals.
Having already guaranteed bronze medals, the Irish stars will box for gold at the Ice Palace if they win their respective fights on Friday.
A special highlights programme featuring coverage of all the bouts involving Irish fighters will be broadcast on Friday at 6.30pm.
Presenter Darragh Maloney will be joined in studio by Bernard Dunne and Mick Dowling for analysis of all the action.
If the Irish boxers' success continues and some of them progress to the finals, RTÉ Two and RTÉ.ie will also broadcast a further programme featuring highlights of the Irish finals on Saturday at 11.00pm.

Re: Irish Boxers
Boxing and Golf are about the only two individual sports where we take an "elite Athlete" approach in that the cream of the young talent are given differentiated treatment from an early age to put them on a track that will have them competitive at the highest level. Most other sports athletes have to work there may through the "mundane" until they are in their twenties at which point they have not had the intensity or preparation that other countries apply.
The British extend this approach to cycling, Rowing, yachting etc.
Our relative success in boxing and in Golf is fairly clear proof of the merits of such an approach. For all we know we could have crop of youngsters that would put Usain Bolt to shame - but we don't have the set-up in Athletics
