Brian Mullins was a great but done after his accident, and Farrell and Rock were good but not great, while Clarke, Royane and Sherlock were fairly good players at best. The players I named were all recently listed in the top 125 players of all time in the independent, most of them in the top 50. Brian McGuigan & Brian Dooher were also on that list. But as I said earlier, we in other counties love the hype and myth, because it makes our victories all the sweeter.
I'm not winding anyone up Mullins, I genuinely think that Dublin have not produced enough top players in the last 30 years, but let's agree to differ on this one.
No i disagree...i believe the Dublin team from 92-95 was as good as the team of the 70s....They were just unlucky in some of the big games no disrespect to ulster teams that beat them...
YOUR WRONG TC... We have always produced top players they didn't lick it of a stone..

Can't agree with this? Unless by unlucky, you mean not good enough?

I'm with RMD on this one. Dublin 91-95 were not a patch on the 70s side. How many of that team would have made Heffo's team? They came up short year after year before scraping past a very average Tyrone side. They were a decent side, but I always felt that persistence won them an All-Ireland, rather than talent.

Whoa - my feelgood thread has degenerated rapidly ....
TC I would side with my Dub buddies here and think you are very harsh on the Dubs. It is widely accepted that the Dubs team of the mid 90s were most unlucky to only win one Sam. They remind me of the Armagh team of the early noughties in that respect. I feel both should have won more - but the record books show they didn't! They won four Leinsters on the trot -the first after the heartbreak of the Meath epic the year before. Curran, Barr and Deegan were a renowned half back unit - throw in Moran, Stynes and Clarke, Redmond and you had some fine players there. Oh and I don't think anyone mentioned John O'Leary - an all time great number one who spanned back to 1983. On that team you had Hargan, Drumm, Duff and Anton O'Toole to name some. Mullins came back from a serious car crash and may not have been the player he was before so the fact that he won an All Ireland only underlines how good a player he was in my opinion. I doff my hat to Tyrone's achievements in the Noughties - but to compare them to Dublin over 30 is stretching it too far IMO. Respect where its due and all that.

I don't think the boys would rate Charlie hip. There are other v good players I omitted - Paddy Moran, Ciaran Walsh, Mick Holden ... but I only threw a few out there.

But sure the 90's was the decade of the teams that should have won more. It is also widely accepted that my own county should have pushed on for another title and I'm sure Derry people feel the same. The Dublin team of the 90's was a good team but nothing even close to that of the 70's.
I'm staying out of the better players argument as I think comparing players accross the years is very difficult.

I agree and thats why the Top 125 is a nonsense really. Inevitably players in the era of those choosing will come to mind as greats whereas they will not even have seen footage - or grainy at best - of great players before the mid 50s.
The thing with the 70s team is that they were up against the greatest Kerry team ever and still won 3 Sams. So I don't think you can fairly compare other generations with that team. They probably were the greatest Dublin team ever.

Yeah it's all about the context in which a player or team operates.

Re: Maybe this year ......
To be fair to the Dubs, 4 provincial titles in a row when provincial championships were important is a fine achievement. Given that Tyrone in 96 were the first Ulster team to put two Ulster titles in a row in over 20 years.

True Samin, but what did they have to beat to win those titles? Meath were in transition, and Kildare were just starting to reawaken. Offaly had declined from the 80s, and Laois, Westmeath and the rest were nowhere.
