A small milestone....
As this appears to be my 1k. post, what better way to mark it than with this timeless classic.
Pleasing to see and hear the historical village of Fenagh mentioned. I think I'll have a small celebration.....

Said historical village plunged into mourning with the untimely death of Gda.Gary McLoughlin in Donegal last night. The media have managed to bypass the village, saying he was from Ballinamore...not so. A grand young lad, part-timed for a year or two in the local. Bad news and at a bad time....R.I.P.

Very sorry to hear this news. Happening too often lately. RIP and a speedy recovery to his colleague Bernard McLoughlin.

The news about that poor young 15 month old girl in Enniskillen hasn't done much to encourage anyone to adopt the Christmas spirit either

No indeed. Christmas makes these horrible events seem even worse. Makes you count your blessings.

Re: A small milestone....
In a quirky look at this tragedy, the late landlord, Nealie, used to sit at the window beside the front door upon returning from his "break" across the road (half a bottle of brandy type break) and he'd sigh and complain for 5 minutes, during which time poor young Gary would stare anxiously at him, wondering what to do.
I often think Nealie used count to 300, because when the 5 minutes ruminations were up, he would raise the lairy eye and casually raise three fingers up to Gary. Now should a fire have broken out Gary would ignore it and promptly bang three shots of Hennessy into a tall glass, fire in a Red Bull and leave it at the bottom end of the counter.
Nealie would casually rise, skirt around and lift a few glasses (never more than 4) and ramble back, treble brandy in fist.....
The light of heaven to them both....

Re: A small milestone....
Ah Boxty thats a right sad tale no doubt. The Larry C link brings back many memories no doubt - and the lyrics deserve an airing, many a time I heard them sung ....
Last night I had a pleasant dream I woke up with a smile
I dreamt that I was back again in dear old Erin’s Isle
I thought I saw Lough Allen’s banks in the valleys’ down below
it was my lovely Leitrim where the Shannon water’s flow
I stood enchanted at the scene of grandeur and of light
the next I left for Carrick town before the dark of night
I passed Sheemore that fairy hill where flowers wildly grow
and I passed the grave of Finn McCool where the Shannon water’s flow
The next I saw was Fenagh Town with her ancient abbey walls
the preaching of her holy monks re-echoes through her halls
I stood with reverence on the spot reluctant for to go
from the town of saints and sages where the Shannon water’s flow
I’ve travelled far from this great land from the east and to the west
but of all the islands I have seen I love my own the best
and if ever I return again there’s one place I will go
it will be my lovely Leitrim where the Shannon water’s flow
