Ireland in Turin
Dervala O'Rourke won her heat and was third fastest overall. Can she bring back a medal in the 60m Hurdles? Or will she continue to live of her reputation in the European Championships two years ago?
Paul Hession - the fastest European (arguably) over 100m and 200m - goes in the 60m later on.
And David Gillick won his 400m heat by half the track and is into the semis and runs at 5.05 later today.
Also a new name (Kelly Proper) broke the Irish long jump record and is into the final tomorrow.
Also two Irish women in the semis of the 400m at 4.45 today. Both will struggle to progress further though.

Oh dear!
Live streaming on RTE of all events for anyone who is interested.
We'll see what the Cork girl is made of in the main event tonight.

Re: Ireland in Turin
Roisin McGettigan only fifth in her heat and that probably won't be good enough. Turned into a bit of a tactical nightmare for all bar the Russian runner. Don't know why they allowed her so much rope in front.
The 800m lad finished fourth of five.

Re: Ireland in Turin
Both of the 400m girls knocked out after they finished fourth and fifth in semi 2. Miss Andrews produced a personal best though. I think Roisin McGettigan made the final of the 1500m. Her claims for a medal are small to say the least.
Gillick out in 5 minutes or so.

Presume you mean out on the track as distinct from out of the competition!!!!!!!!!

Re: Ireland in Turin
**** of a Romanian definitely pushed Gillick as he was about to go by him down the back. Gillick was at the very least booked for second and probably would have picked up the winner in the straight. This is very disappointing.

No chance of appeal or anything I presume Loyal?

Re: Ireland in Turin
Wouldn't imagine so. Maybe they could punish the Romanian but unless they re-run the race its bye bye to Dundrum athlete. He completed the race but trailed in about 30 seconds after everyone esle. I still need to see it again but Gillick was about to go by your man and there was fighting (arm pushing or whatever) and next thing is Gillick is falling to the ground. There is little doubt in my mind he (David) would have won.
Our last hope in the Oval Lingotto Stadium tonight is Derval. Lets pin our hopes on the Cork pin up girl!

Third in 7.97 - seasonal best. Well done Derval, at least one bronze medal on its way home.

Re: Ireland in Turin
Paul Hession has to have a chance but 60m isn't really his distance (no 100m or 200m). His times suggests he is in the hunt but a medal will be tough.
Mary Cullen has a decent chance in the 3000m. She certainly has realistic medal hopes but there is a Russian in there who looks streets ahead of everyone else. Silver or Bronze a possible though.

Re: Ireland in Turin
Update...............
Paul Hession is through to the final of the 60m but has only a very very small chance of picking up a medal. The now infamous Dwain Chambers looks set for gold there.
The two 60m Irish girls failed to qualify and are out as is the one in the women's High Jump.
However, Mary Cullen won her semi final in the womens 3000m. She took it up with 5x200m circuits remaining and never seen another rival. Won it cosily. Unfortunetely the other Irish one in the 3000m finished fifth in her semi and is out.
Looking towards the action later today, Waterford's Kelly Proper is by no means out of it in the Long Jump. On the best jumps yesterday, she is 8cm off a medal and all of the top 5 jumps were personal bests so there is sure to be one or two who can't repeat yesterday's efforts. A top 5 finish is likely if she can improve again on her personal best.

Re: Ireland in Turin
Roisin McGettigan just missed out on a medal finishing fourth in the 1500m final. Hession was knocked out too. Two Irish athletes in the final of the women's 3000m tomorrow and Mary Cullen has a great chance of a medal. Kelly Proper knocked out in the Long Jump. But if ever your bored, google her. When I seen her, I though I was going to melt.......................

Re: Ireland in Turin
Mary Cullen finished third in the final of the 3000m just there. Could have been second but she tied up in the straight and had nowhere near the speed of the winner. Still two bronze medals for Ireland.
