Re: Quick question on Dublin minors of 1982
Allston
1984 was the last time Dublin won the All Ireland minor title - beating Tipperary in the final!! The article below was in the Evening Herald on Tuesday last would you believe - so the guy in question would appear to be Timmy O'Driscoll from Crokes - other than that I don't know anything about the guy! Some big names on that team though!
Hope this helps!
NICE to see you, to see you, nice. A special gathering at the Castleknock Golf and Country Club. The 1984 All-Ireland minor football champions, Dublin.
It was a reunion with a difference. They met for golf on Friday morning, enjoyed a lovely meal, stayed overnight and had the big breakfast on Saturday morning.
They watched a DVD of the 1984 final. The banter was priceless and every player was presented with the DVD of the match and a commemorative T-shirt.
"It couldn't have gone any better," reflected Paul Clarke, the captain in '84. "From start to finish, it was just top-class. The staff at the hotel were just superb. Mick Galvin will be captain at the Golf Club there next year and he was a huge help to us."
Jim Stynes played on the '84 side. He wasn't well enough to travel from Australia but Paul organised a video link, which proved one of the highlights of the weekend.
"It was fantastic. We spoke to Jim for half an hour. He's in good form and it was a big lift for him to hear from all the lads," explains Paul.
The reunion was months in the planning. But Paul would love to see a new crop of minor maestros emerge. "It's a nice honour in a way to be the last All-Ireland winning Dublin minor captain, but the quicker it ends the better. It's terrible to think that it's all that long ago when we last won the minor."
The management back then were Alan Larkin, Brother Tommy McDonald, Davy Griffin and the late Bill Ronayne. The legendary Christy Sweets was in charge of the kit.
"The hardest part that year was beating Tipperary in the final," explains Paul. "People were saying 'Who are Tipperary?' But they had beaten us in a challenge match earlier that season, although we had sent down a weakened team to test the water.
"We were hot favourites in the final. Our little bit of experience told in the end and we managed to do the business. Many of the lads had never seen the game on telly until last weekend.
"Coming through Leinster wasn't easy. We beat Westmeath in the final. We had played with a lot of the Westmeath lads on the Leinster Colleges side that was picked as part of the GAA's centenary year.
"We beat Derry in the semi-final. They had plenty of good footballers, so to overcome them was a big result. It was great looking back on it all with the players over the weekend.
"When we were doing the presentations, we were telling little stories and remembering this and that. We had the All-Ireland minor trophy there and it was lovely."
The chat went on late into the night and the early hours. And the occasion had a poignant conclusion for Clarkey.
He's managing St Margaret's these days. On Saturday afternoon he was out at a challenge game between a Margaret's selection and next year's Dublin minors.
The Dublin Minors of 1984: Paul Clarke (Capt), Mick Crowley, Conor Crowley, Shay Whiston, David Rossiter, John McCann, Paul Daly (Whitehall Colmcille); Martin Broderick (Ballyfermot); Alan Carey (O'Dwyer's); Eoin Mullin, Alan McClean (Raheny); David Whelan (An Caislean); Pearse Mullarkey (Thomas Davis), Timmy O'Driscoll, Donal Hogan, Niall Clancy (Kilmacud Crokes); Jim Stynes (Ballyboden St Enda's); Pádraig Robinson, Greg Walsh (Parnells); Ciarán Walsh, David De Lappe (St Anne's); David Doran (Craobh Chiaráin); Seán Barry (St Monica's); Simon Croughan, Albert Martin, Bob McKeown (Erin's Isle); Niall O'Carroll (Scoil Uí Chonaill); Mick Bissett, John Power, James Fahey (Kilmore); Shay Keane, Andy Healy (St Vincent's); Bernard Farrell (Beann éadair).
