Sligo threw it away
Hard Luck to Sligo today. they had Kerry on the ropes and couldnt deliver that killer punch. Shuda put the penalty over the bar and maybe taken the game to extra time. still tho, fair play to them for showing us all what we already believed, that Kerry 2009 are very very beatable!
Re: Sligo threw it away
i really dont think the peno should have proved that significent, if we had taken our chances after that and before it we won have won the game, but you know this has been our problem freexing when insight of the winning line. its very disapointing because i honestly thought we had a huge chance and even though a lot of ye here laughted and joked about sligo we once again prove we are very close to the top sides in the country and we are. this year will bring us on alot and with a little more composure we would be in the 4th round draw. im proud of the lads the played well enough to win the game but this is championship football and you need to take your scores simple as. great game though

Hard to blame David for the penalty. We had more chances to win the game than that, and actuall yhad mpore wides than Kerry in the end. TBH, I was surprised Johnny Davey didn't step up (I remember him scoring a penalty in a shoot-out to win the SFAI Senior Cup for Summerhill College a few years ago).
It was hard to take any positives from the game on the drive home on Saturday evening, but after watching the game again on TV there was a lot to be positive about.
Hopefully we can hold onto Walsh for another few years, the progress made since last year has been impressive, and there is still plenty of scope for improvement in the team. Adrian Marren is finally showing what we've all known he's capable of, and another year or two under Walsh could benefit him no end. Kell and Coen are showing great potential, and given their age are going to continue improving for a few years yet.
The backs were their usual tenacious selves again. It's the one constant we've been able to expect from Sligo over the past few years, and hopefully this will continue into the future.
If we're going to build on this year we need to find a ball-winning midfielder, and fast. There doesn't seem to be any around the county at the minute, and it's hard to know where we could get one (unless we kidnap Parsons back across the rail-lines in CHarlestown).
Our own kick-outs remain a source of concern as well. Goalkeeping-wize, Fizzy is probably the best keeper in the country. His shot-stopping and ability under a high-ball are second to none, but his kick-outs really let him down. He'd never played in goals for a Gaelic team before playing for Sligo against Down in the league a few years ago (joined the panel as a full back), and still rarely fills the nets for St. John's, but he's been there for Sligo for a few years now, and is running out of excuses for the kick-outs.
