Thing To Do In Sligo
I know this is a tough one folks but I'll ask anyway. Myself the wife and the 3 year old daughter are heading to Sligo for the weekend. We are staying Friday and Saturday night in the Radisson SAS in Rosses Point.
I have visited Sligo before but its a long time ago and it has probably changed quite a bit since then - they've won a Connaught title since that. Anyway the question is were are the good restaurants and what other attractions are there near hand that will help us enjoy the two days and keep we away from a high stool in the hotel bar.
Answers on a postcard................

Ok - Yeats Country is only out the Donegal Road in Drumcliffe. After that .... you're on your own ...

Re: Thing To Do In Sligo
Attractions in Sligo at this time of year are far and few between I'm afraid. Most things to do involve the outdoors, and I wouldn't count of the weather.
The main things to see/do would be Yeat's Grave in Drumcliffe, Carrowmore Tombs (near Strandhill), Glencar Waterfall (close to Rathcormac), Parkes' Castle (out the Dromahair road) and the seaweed baths in Strandhill (may not be the most suitable with a 3 year old though). Weather permitting you could try climbing Knocknarae, or enjoying a stroll on the beach in Rosses Point.
I'm assuming that the daughter or the wife will prevent golf being on the agenda, so the courses in Rosses Point and Strandhill are not of much use.
In terms of Restaurants there are a few good ones around. As JC already mentioned, there is the Yeats Tavern in Drumcliffe (who also happen to sponsor a fine local club ), Fiddler's Creek in the town is very good, as is Bistro Bianconi (best pizza in Ireland, cooked in a proper stone oven). Coach Lane is probably the best spot for food in town, but I'm not sure how good they are for children.
The Radisson itself has a fairly decent restaurant in it as well, but I'd recommend heading into town instead.

Re: Thing To Do In Sligo
Sligo is a lovely place. Strandhill is beautiful and a walk along the beach there will gladden your heart.
I don't know much about Sligo town however I have friend who went to college there and regularly go back for weekends.
Yeat's tavern is a fine place for grub (they have those little buzzers that tell you when your table is ready!!). Don't expact too much from his grave (I mean what do people really expect?) but it's worth a trip anyway.
You'll find loads to do Boc. It's a fine county.

IUf you go along to Lissadel Beach you will see 50,000 dead starfish.
(Did you know that if you pull off a starfish's arm it will grow back again - if they are alive that is)

Lissadell beach is currently inaccessable because those lovely folk from Dublin that bought the estate have blocked all of the access roads. There's an ongoing legal dispute over it, as the roads are long-established public right-of-ways

I'd severely doubt it. More the prawn sandwich brigade (if they could bear crossing the Liffey for the "rugger."

So was this attack of the Asteroidea a pre-meditated onslaught by locals in a bid to get their rights of way back!!!???

Those seaweed baths are brilliant. There I've done my Judith Chalmers bit for Sligo
They really are though. Talk about relaxing, I felt like I had elastic arms when I came out of them.

Re: Thing To Do In Sligo
well lads thanks for the info - though much of it was too late as i had already left for Sligo when you guys decided to furnish me with your thoughts
Anyway i had a most enjoyable weekend - we left Omagh at 2pm on Friday and arrived at hotel about 3.30pm or so - the weather the whole way down was fooking miserable torrential rain the whole way. When we got checked in the young one was already looking to go to the pool, so of we went and spent a few hours in there, had my first experience of an outdoor hot tub - there i was sitting in the pouring rain in an outdoor hot tub - only in Ireland
Having worked up a hunger it was time for some grub and as the rain had not let up we decided it best to stay around the hotel - the food in the bar was fantastic - but needless to say the journey down and the time spent in the pool had taken its toll on the young one and we retreated to the room so she could sleep.
Next morning the heartiest of Irish breakfasts was had by all - those self service breakfasts are fecking great of course i over indulged. The weather was still crap so there wasnt much to do but head into the town centre for a bit of shopping. A few hours later and many euros lighter we headed back to the hotel for a quick dip before heading to the hotel restaurant for a meal. Again the food was of the highest order as was the service. We did manage to get several beverages on board before tiredness kicked in again.
All in all it was a good weekend bearing in mind the restrictions of taking a 3 year old with us, i couldnt praise the hotel highly enough and i would certainly go back.

i did forget to add that on the Friday when i went to the pool i thought B&W had organised a bit of a welcome party for me - there were 2 chancy women in the jacuzzi giving me the eye, i was tempted to ask them about Clonmel but decided to leave it. They weren't stunners mind you - more like show ponys, they'd do for riding round the house but you wouldnt want to be seen out with them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The sister was up in the leisure centre on Friday afternoon.....
It's a good hotel though, only about 500 yards from the house!

I think her boyfriend was there with her. He was over from England for the week and was getting the grand tour!
I wasn't around to call up I'm afraid, only finished up in Clonmel on Saturday so just came up to Dublin, didn't grace the parents with my presence this weekend. If I was home I would probably have taken a wander up.
