A great man, and an equally great loss. An inspiration to everyone.

Oh sorry about that, what I meant to say was the greatest thing that never happened to this country was this fella coming into power and turning us all into a Communist loving, terrorist supporting, bitter 19th century proletariat. Get to fook Jayo.

Re: Tomás Mac Giolla
I would acknowledge and respect a man that held such a straight, consistent and dedicated approach to his beliefs and convictions even if these convictions differ from my own in polar proportions.

De Valera was right I suppose, to offer condolonce's to the German Embassador that time so
ps, I might not be commonly decent, but I am at least, decently common

Re: Tomás Mac Giolla
Tomas MacGiolla I first met when we barricaded the doors of the student's union at Queen's when the police came to arrest him circa 1970.
Tomas was one of the greats of Irish politics, a really nice, gentle man who never faltered in his beliefs.
He also never sold out on his beliefs, nor was he a recipient in the "brown envelope" culture that pervades politics in the Republic of Ireland.
Tomas was a comrade, and then a political colleague. I regretted that he did stay behind that faithful, final split in 1992, when I inadvertently lit the fuse, but in a way it was inevitable that he would.
Living in the south he was always always likely to, the main reasons for that final break being found in the north. But he stayed in a dignified manner. He actually supoported the motion that day, but couldn't bring himself to desert Cathal and sean, when push came to shove.
Tomas enabled the Worker's Party to win a fair few seats in the Dail,7 in all, by 1989. He had come a long way from addressing "crowds" of about 4 people outside the GPO in Easter 1968 say.
He also saw the way forward in the 1960s for militant republicanism, and it was a tragedy that others only learnt this thirty years later. Maybe the north needed that 30 years of slaughter to alter entrenched mind sets, but if everyone had listened to men like Tomas, it could all have been different.
A dignified, noble man, who will be missed in a country noted for the greed of its politicians.
His proudest moment was perhaps leading the walk out when the war monger Ronald Reagan addressed the Oireachtas.
May Tomas find peace in his passing, because he never really found it here.

A good read P - and a good man even though I do not share his thoughts or philosophy - his principles, beliefs and ethics are beyond question .... a rarity.
