Re: Rugby or Soccer
Sport is sport and both are great games when played by the best. I'd have great time for the likes of Arshavin, Zhirkov, Kaka, Metzelder, Pirlo, Nesta and Lahm - the greats. Also Joe Rokocoko is fantastic too.
However, both sports are very very weak in this country. The rugby crowd made a show of themselves at the last World Cup and tried to blame it on the manager.
The soccer team is going nowhere fast and by some fluke have ended up in probably the weakest qualification group.

Re: Rugby or Soccer
At a National level, I would prefer rugby to soccer because the Irish team is made up of the whole of Ireland whereas the soccer team is Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
From a club/province point of view, I would watch any of the Irish provinces play but wouldn't really feel strongly about one over the others.
I go to a few League of Ireland games during the year but not that many and I also support Everton in the premiership.
There, I've said it.

Re: Rugby or Soccer
When I saw the topic first I thought it said Rugby or snooker.
I would prefer soccer. Just remember when the soccer team gets to the world cup the country goes mad. I don't think I ever saw them go as mad in the rugby.

Soccer is the best foreign sport, though rugby is getting more and more popular. I support Leeds in soccer

Re: Rugby or Soccer
Soccer is boring and is full of pre madonnas. The best example of the differences in these sports in Rob Kearney. He nearly got his head took off by an Italian and he got up to run on. Soccer players go down injured during a hard gust of wind

Re: Rugby or Soccer
Soccer was always more popular than rugby and i much prefer soccer. i think that its more exciting and there are loads of competitions in soccer-the FA cup, the premier league, champions league, not to mention the coca cola championship and the various divisions. There are a load more competitions in soccer and there's always soccer to watch on TV. even if you dont support the teams playing, you'd watch it anyway. Generally, that doesnt happen with rugby and there are fewer matches and comps

Re: Rugby or Soccer
The trouble with soccer there is periods in a match were nothing happens. That never happens in rubgy. When you talk about competitions in rubgy there is the guinness permier league, Maganers league, HC, the nations, you also have rugby league and their competitions.
Rugby is as well televised now as soccer is

Re: Rugby or Soccer
There's arguments for both sides. Overall, I think that there's more to soccer off the pitch than there is with rugby. but i guess as rugby becomes more popular it will be seen as equals with soccer. ya there can be long periods of nothing in soccer matches, and rugby is generally a more action-packed and exciting game, but it's just the spirit and range of styles of skills in soccer that makes it so impressive

There is one thing I would implement from Rugby into GAA sports that would be the respect the show the referee and their oppenents.
Its something I have always admired.

Re: Rugby or Soccer
I would have to say that in some rugby matches the over kicking often ruins the game. Surely it would be better if there was more of an incentive to run with the ball.

Have a ticket for the Hill next Saturday which means I won't have to blag me way in like last time!! Really looking forward to it and hoping for a similar performance and result as 2 years ago. Think if we can get an early leads we can blow them away - Kidney a much more astute coach than Johnston.
