Galway Football..Is there a future..
The image of the legend on a postage stamp might be all that afficinados of Galway football have to cling to, but, while the hurlers are a law unto themselves, can the county footballers resurrect the dream??
The team of Fallon, dePaor, Donnellan, Kevin Walsh et al, are but fading memories (Except for those who despise handball football)..
St.Jarlath's weren't far short of a colleges win this year and historically the famed school has thrown up the nucleus of county teams.
But today, Galway are the poor relations of Connacht football.

Three way battle for football manager's post
THE early race to become the next Galway senior football manager looks set to be a three-way contest between Galway All-Ireland winning U21 manager Alan Mulholland, former Galway minor manager Gerry Fahy and current Sligo senior manager, Kevin Walsh, with Mulholland emerging as the initial favourite.
The Galway Football Board has confirmed it will ‘shop local’ to find a replacement for outgoing senior manager Tomás Ó Flatharta, who was sacked from his position on Friday night just 10 months after his appointment.
Chairman John Joe Holleran – who was indirectly criticised at the weekend by a senior player for the instability in Galway football created by the yearly axing of managers – confirmed that delegates have insisted the new manager must be a Galway man, or at least live locally, following back-to-back seasons where outside managers, Ó Flatharta and Joe Kernan, were let go after poor results inside 10 months.
Already Mulholland has publicly expressed an interest in the position, saying he would consider taking over if nominated and Gerry Fahy hasn’t ruled out the prospect either. Other contenders may emerge in the coming week.
Mulholland this week said: “I was hoping to remain as U21 manager next year and defend our crown. That was my focus and I was not expecting to have to deal with any issue about the senior job. I enjoyed a very good working relationship with Tomás and he and his management were extremely cooperative and helpful to us through the year and that played a big part in our success. If I’m nominated, I will give it consideration but we will just have to wait and see what happens.”
Galway minor football manager of the last two seasons, Gerry Fahy, who was unsuccessful in his bid for the senior position last year, told Tribune Sport that if he is nominated he would give it serious consideration. Fahy said he has no ill feeling about not getting the nod last year, and he agrees with the general consensus expressed by delegates last week that the new manager should be Galway-based.
“To be honest with you I haven’t thought too much about it, the announcement was only made a few days ago but anyone involved in football would be interested in the Galway job. I haven’t spoken to anyone about it yet and haven’t been approached by anyone, but you’d certainly give it serious thought if you were nominated. Galway is one of the best jobs in the country and for a Galway football man with Galway blood, you’d have to have an interest in the job,” he said.
Another contender, Sligo manager Kevin Walsh couldn’t be reached this week but he has one year left in his two-year term with the Yeats County senior side and the Sligo County Board are anxious to keep him.

Alan Mulholland will not be opposed for the Galway football managerial vacancy as everyone else has withdrawn. I believe the board intend to go through an interview process with him anyway but it's a formality. He is the right man for the job

The futures bright, the futures maroon and white! Be interesting to see what odds he makes Galway for the All Ireland next year
Mulholland takes Galway reins
Alan Mulholland was appointed Galway's new senior football manager last night.
The Salthill/Knocknacarra clubman, who becomes the Westerners' fourth manager in as many years, has been handed a three-year term. He will hope to see out that term after the previous two managers - Joe Kernan and Tomas O Flatharta - survived just one season, while prior to that Liam Sammon was ousted after two.
A former Galway player, Mulholland boasts an impressive managerial CV which includes All-Ireland minor and U21 triumphs with the Tribesmen in 2007 and this year. He will be joined by his U21 selectors, Tuam Stars manager Alan Flynn and Donal Ó Flatharta from Spiddal.

Galway such a proud GAA county yet so gutless in recent years. And in both codes.

Galway have been slow enough to adjust to the latent cynicism that predominates our games nowadays.Podger wrote:Galway such a proud GAA county yet so gutless in recent years. And in both codes.

I see Mulholland is saying that Michael Meehan is in danger of never recovering sufficiently from his ankle injury to be able to play again. What a huge loss to our game. Fantastic player.

Yes, that would indeed be sad news, both for Galway and the game in general. A very talented and exciting footballer.

At under 21 level, Meehan was one of those players who looked destined for greatness.
Howver he never really impressed at senior level. Why? I would say probably a combination of things. Precocious talent, a lot of injuries and playing with bad players.
Funny. A similiar situation developing with a Galway hurler round about now.

A loss to Galway, influential sporadically, but they'll be at a loss for him just the same.
He would never spread terror when in possession though. Disillusioned I suppose, given the 2013 draw in Connacht.

one of those guys who will probably be best remembered as a nearly man, never really acheived the greatness he looked destined to achieve in his early days
