When sport is cruel .....
There is no doubting the power of sport in lifting a nation or a parish or a county or a province ... but when it goes the other way then bejasus its rough!
I am in the unhappy position of supporting the Dubs and Leeds - though not fanatically! It could be worse I suppose - I could be from Meath, or support Arsenal, or Ulster rugby.
But when sport kicks you in the nether regions it can kick hard - and long. Dublin have long provided this pain - and consistently. False dawns have become as regular as prune induced bowel movements. Expectations have constantly come crashing to earth with the inevitabililty and surety of heavy rain during an Irish summer. You go out in the shirt full of hope and optimism and arrive home dishevelled, disappointed and disheartened.
Sunday brought a new chapter. Coasting. And waiting for the inevitable. That sickening deja vu feeling when you can sense it coming down the tracks like the Orient Express - minus the romance and pleasantry. A day when the best Dublin performers on the sod were Aslan and even they left you wondering as they signed off their set with Crazy World. Crazy World indeed. We have fallen down so many times, Dunno why dunno where, Don't care less its all the same .....
Sport can be as brutal as it can be uplifting. The euphoria is well documented in Irish life and spreads around the globe. What is less well documented is the flip side. The kick in the gut Monday morning feeling that comes with trying to delete fresh memories with an abundance of alcohol. A solution of short-term duration only. You would think that there would be a certain immunity at this stage but no - if anything each fresh disappointment exacerbates the wounds.
The only solution is to move on. Roll on Saturday at 3.00pm in the Aviva! C'mon Leinster!

"Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering, forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any; even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful". Remember that 1984 final when the yanks went ape. Accused Budd of tripping Slaney although Budd was in front of her. Name changed to Mary Deckchair afterwards.
