Loyalists and the irish language Empty Loyalists and the irish language

Watched a documentary last night on bombay street, i seen a mural while watching it reminded me of other loyalist murals, the difference with these murals is they have the irish language included in them, two in the ballybeen and one on the shankill, actually another on the shankill makes reference to the irish to, it tells us what shankill means in irish which is old church.

However two of these other ones say lambh dhearg abu, and tge other says cuhullain uladh abu (or something along them lines), maybe pat is better to answer this, however i find their interest in using irish on their murals extremely interesting and wonder is there any significance behind it!

NSG - I worked up in the Coleraine area for about two years and stumbled on this mural of Cúhullain in Bushmills of all places, I must admit that i didn't come across too many gaelic speakers from the Bushmills, Stranocum or Dervock areas during my time there

No seb i dont think so, they dont normally adopt with that language either, they do have the dialect ulster scots but it isnt that either, a strange one, they talk of the queens English and so on yet we find this.

Yes mugsy ive heard of one in coleraine never seen it though, i wonder what their thoughts are, i mean cuhullain a legendary figure from times which are suppose to have been before they got here, maybe they are mixing him up with hugh o neill lol.

Im still not sure about it all, would really like to know their understanding, i was told before that when the british were getting rid of the irish language in ireland one of the last places it existed was in north antrim, survived by a protestant clergy man who said weekly sermons in it, so maybe they have an interest in the culture after all, we'll keep the hurls away from them for a while yet lol.

I remember from the recent past Albert Fry, from a Unionist background being head of Conradh na Gaeilge for a good number of years. Very Happy

Cú Chulainn defended Ulster from Invaders from "the west" so presume Loyalists associate with that
As regards the Irish language - Im not sure - Though didn't a lot of Loyalists learn Irish in Prison so they knew what the Republicans were saying ?

Thats the one gaa fan.

They did learn it to know what republicans where saying however they remove themselves from it culturally, i presume the cuhullain defender of ulster against queen maeve and all that does have a lot to do with it.

Just find it strange they identify with something yet they wont support it, just find it strange.
