Congratulations
I would like to say congratulations to the people of South West Donegal who have rejected the soldiers of Destruction and also the "alternative" of FG/Labour.
In huge numbers they turned to the best candidate from a party opposed to the severe cuts and mis-treatment of the lesss well off in our society.
At last people are beginning to cop on.
The 7000 or so people who voted for the FF candidate are not real Irish people at all and anyone who votes for them at the next General election is a Traitor to this country.
Congrats Donegal South/West constituents and well Done Pearse Doherty T.D.

Re: Congratulations
Very good result for SF
Wasn't expecting FF to lose as much ground and thought that even though he was dreadful that at worst FG would pick up 25% of the vote.
Doesn't make any difference really - Doherty was always going to get enough to take a seat in the general election
Coughlan, McGinley,Doherty
but if this is indicative of the level of swing away from FF there is going to be carnage in the General Election -
The shinners will fancy their chances in a lot of areas where FF have two seats - Eg Donegal North East - MCLochlainn was close last time out - McDaid is not running so all he has to do is pick up some of the "letterkenny" vote that was loyal to McDaid rather than FF

Re: Congratulations
Dr.Shephard Could you explain why Sinn Fein voted for this pay rise, during times of cutbacks
Divided Dail unites -- to give itself a pay rise
As the country faces economic meltdown, TDs and senators are planning to improve their already plush terms and conditions.
An official estimate of the money required to run the Dail in 2011 'sneaked' through the Dail last Thursday reveals that the recession stops at the gates of Leinster House.
In a touching scene, deputies across all parties suspended hostilities and agreed to the estimates without a single objection.
The estimates reveal that the cost of a Dail which serves fewer people than the population of cities such as greater Manchester, will in 2011 come to €112,983,000 -- which represents a drop of just €1.2m (or 1 per cent) on last year's spending.
But expenditure on the perks and services enjoyed by our TDs and senators will actually increase in certain areas next year.
The cost of salaries for TDs, senators and secretarial assistants will increase, while salaries of staff like those in catering and behind the Dail bar will decrease.
The estimates for 2011 reveal that there will be an increase in the postal and telecommunications service, which allows TDs and senators to send out promotional literature to their constituents.
The budget for delegates to 'other parliamentary assemblies' has increased by 50 per cent and the 'grant in aid' for 'inter-parliamentary activities' has also increased by a whopping 40 per cent.
Even this, however, is dwarfed by the increase in the budget for allowances in respect of former members of the houses of the Oireachtas, which has been increased from €49,000 to €149,000.
At a time when pensioners fear losing entitlements such as free travel, the estimates also contain an increase of the 'grant in aid' to parliamentary pensioners from from €10,084,000 to €10,562,000, indicating that Dail and Seanad pension recipients will be unique within the country in actually securing an increase next year. The estimates also reveal that there will be a substantial increase in the Budget for televising Dail and Seanad proceedings, which provides TDs and Senators with much-desired coverage.
Though some minimalistic cuts are revealed in the anticipated expenses of TDs and senators, one source noted that "when the increases are taken in the round, TDs and senators will not be losing a penny in salaries and expenses next year''.
Every member of the dail agreed to this Dr.

Even more amazing is the fact that without a viable alternative, the people of Ireland are willing to put the destiny of the state in the hands of Sinn Fein.

To be fair thats the key point from today
Brian Farrell Swingometer
FF Minus 30
FG Minus 2
Shinners and Others + 32
IF FG think they are going to win 80+ seats this ain't a good barometer
now Im sure PSTG will talk about the civil war and the Donegal anyone but FG attitude
but it looks like the FF diehards will vote FF and the FF angry diehards will vote for anyone but FF or FG - means that FG can't gain seats in FF areas.

Re: Congratulations
Having been canvassing there last weekend, the mood did appear to have swung to Doherty. The party stance in forcing the by-election allied to his 2 previous near misses rallied the Donegal people in his direction and I can only say they got their result.
Coughlan would want to hold firm on a single candidate ticket, cos' given the meltdown in the vote a dual ticket could prove disasterous.
Almost 21k. first preferences vapourised into more than 7k.....Frightening.
Anyway, its over and congrats Deputy Doherty....
There hasn't been a Deputy Doherty since the halcyon and heady days of the late Sean.....

__________
There is however a former neighbour of mine who is also an elected Doherty from the 26- he sits in the lower house in a different parliament
Pearse is a "Kennedyesque" statesman in comparison - though will leave it to BOC and TC to cast judgement - as im sure he works like a "(Mary O Rourkeism) in the local area etc etc.

Yet she goes on the TV today and talks about a chance of two seats - The problem is that spin and lies are now the default reaction to every question - If they can 66% of the seats with 20% of the vote maybe she should be Minister for Finance
I remember back in the day (07 and prior) - Our dinner party ended up breaking bread with her entourage
"Town bar and Grill" if Im not mistaken - We were 8 and she was 6 and everyone else had left
Jokes and speeches and toasts became mingled - It is fair to say that she could speak more "colourfully" than a bad tempered farmer talking to a contrary bull but maybe that means that Agri was always her best brief.
