Inis Oírr Win All Islands Title
13 September 2010
The 2010 All Islands Gaelic Football Title will be heading to Galway this year as Inis Oirr claimed the title with an impressive win over fellow Aran Islanders Inis Mor in yesterday's final. Both these teams played some excellent football in Saturday's group stages and were deserving finalists. Inis Mor went in at the break with a 6 point lead after playing with the aid of a stiff breeze. Inis Oirr made short work of cutting into the deficit and were back on level terms ten minutes into the second half. They took the lead shortly after and a goal with 5 minutes remaining was the icing on the cake for the Oirr men.

Is the mainland not an Island ? or does the fact that there is two different countries on it create a problem ?

Wonderful consistency though with a Galway team also losing the final .....
The people of Ireland's Eye are miffed with the constant rejection of their application to participate. Star full forward Nancy Pettigrew (83) said 'The Galwegians in particular seem to be entrenched in their position - I suppose its because its the only way they will win anything.'

I was on Clare Island recently and noticed an advert for one of these games.
They have a smashing pitch, a lot better than we have in a town with a population greater than that of County Leitrim.

The pitch on Inis Oirr is actually top notch as well. They contribute about 6 players to the Aran Islands club, the rest being from Inis Mór as no one lives on Inis Mean. Crucially they have the best players with the Seoíge's in particular standing out. Sadly the Aran club have lost the last two West board Finals both by a point each time to An Spídeal but glory beckons sooner rather than later for them I reckon.

Galway and other West of Ireland teams used win for fun when men like this ruled the roost. Was sad to hear of his passing
Death of Fr Hughes
THE MAN who created the best Gaelic football nursery in the country passed away yesterday.
Fr Oliver Hughes was the driving force behind St Jarlath’s College in Tuam, who hold a record 12 All-Ireland senior colleges football titles.
The 66-year old passed away yesterday after a brief illness.
Fr Hughes won a Hogan Cup medal in 1961, the only year in which St Jarlath’s have retained the All-Ireland title. He returned as a teacher in 1971 and managed teams that won All-Irelands in the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s and as recently as 2002, a team which included Kildare’s James Kavanagh and Galway skipper Michael Meehan.
