The Morning After
This has to be one of the worst days of the summer every year. Everyone keeps saying to me "ah there's always next year!" but the thing is I don't want next year, I want this year. The memories of the great win over Dublin and the Leinster final now completely over-shadowed by the loss yesterday evening. Reading posts from over yonder (I haven't braved them on here yet) are horrible. People who's opinion I would have respected in the past just say now that they're happy to see us gone and that we're just cheaters anyways. Is that really what the GAA is about? We were well beaten by a far superior team and well done to the Kildare team and management for that. And to the Kildare supporters- You far out numbered us and well done on that and on a whole yous were great, but the memory of walking off the Hill, tears streaming down my face and a lump in my throat, with a certain section of the Kildare support just jeering won't fade away too fast.

Re: The Morning After
That alas Royal Girl is what the GAA is about.
But you had the win over the Dubs. And the Leinster title.
In some 50 years of watching Antrim I had the pleasure of singing "We shall overcome" under the Hogan stand in September 1969, one month into "The Troubles" after the U 21 final.
I had the great joy of beating the Ulster aristocrats in my day, Down, in the first round of Ulster in 2000amidst hail stones the size of hurling balls. We hadn't won a game in 18 years.
And I had 1991 when we ran Kilkenny to two points in the semi and my eyes fill up as I write this some 19 years later.
At your age I remember leaving Croke in tears after Kilkenny lost a hurling final to Wexford in 1968, and me from Antrim.
And I heard the "Green Glens" being played on finals day in 1989.
The GAA is all about tears Royal Girl, but your glory days will surely come as well.
Don't aim too high.

My eyes were filled with tears when Kilkenny lost to Galway in the 2005 AI Semi Final, strangly enough not the All Ireland the year before.

The morning after was a shocker for me after 16 odd pints on Heino. I did end up over a wall like a beetle trying to get back up on the Saturday - but **** it I was euphoric - a slow day Sunday nonetheless!

Re: The Morning After
Look as I keep on saying, the problem in Meath is that now the Meath team is now a Dublin/Meath/Louth selection. What I would say to Dublin is that you can keep Dunboyne, Dunshaughlin, Ashbourne, Ratoath and Summerhill and to Louth, you can keep Stamullen, Duleek, Laytown and Slane.
An imaginery line should be drawn through Trim and Navan and only players north of that line be picked. Here's the team that should have started last weekend:
1. Brendan Murphy (Trim)
2. Chris O'Connor (Ballinabrackey)
3. Kevin Reilly (Navan O'Mahonys)
4. Eoin Harrington (Wolfe Tones)
5. Shane McAnarney (Clann na Gael)
6. Cormac McGuinness (Navan O'Mahonys)
7. Gary O'Brien (Navan O'Mahonys)
8. Brian Meade (Rathkenny)
9. Mark Ward (Navan O'Mahonys)
10. Seamus Kenny (Simonstown)
11. Stephen Bray (Navan O'Mahonys)
12. Peader Byrne (Ballinlough)
13. Brian Farrell (Nobber)
14. Shane O'Rourke (Simonstown)
15. Cian Ward (Wolfe Tones)

Under my regime, the following would be gone from the panel: Anthony Moyles, Caoimhin King, Nigel Crawford, Joe Sheridan, Graham Reilly, Davy Lyons, Conor Gillespie, Jamie Queeney, Niall Mooney, Brian Menton, Ollie Lewis, Davy Dalton and Paddy O'Rourke.

There's kinda no point trying to wind me up about the whole Dublin thing ATM Loyal I'm well aware of it.. And if you took those players off the panel who'd replace them?

Re: The Morning After
There's plenty of players available. Navan O'Mahony's, Wolfe Tones, Simonstown, Oldcastle, Rathkenny, St.Ultans, Trim. Seven senior clubs to choose from there, not to mention strong intermediate clubs like Nobber, Ballinlough and Carnaross.
I think of the greats that this end of the county has given us in the last 25 years: Brian Stafford, Gerry McEntee, Ollie Murphy, David Beggy, Darren Fay, Joe Cassells, Martin O'Connell, PJ Gillic, Tommy Dowd, Donal Curtis and we could go on.

I also note Donaghmore/Ashbourne sitting comfortably in the Quarter Finals of the championship while the rest of the clubs are planning meticously for the last round of group games. Blessed are they. Happens every year, a team gets O'Mahonys on their now customary once-a-year "off day" and then gets thumped in a Quarter/Semi. Sometimes, they throw in a second one but I doubt Duleek/Bellowstown would be so lucky. With the Dublin champs now a possible non-runner in the Leinster championship, I'm beginning to wonder if the Meath champs, be they O'Mahonys or Seneschalstown, might get a day in the sun. Could Donaghmore/Asbourne even win Meath SFC? Third favourite in my book.

Well the longer the Meath team stayed in the championship the better our chances were really. I wouldn't write us off completely yet though. Like we do have a very good team and still a very young one so even if we don't win this year we'll still be there in years to come. I think the O'Mahonys game gave them a bit of confidence so they won't fear anyone going in to the quater finals which are on the 20th-22nd August. It should be interesting anyway.

Loyal has a valid point here. I never thought much of them South Meath lads either. Lyons, O'Rourke, Giles, Geraghty or even Boylan are only names on programmes at this stage....
