Fair play to Gyan for having the nerve to step up a 2nd time. Hope Uruguay win it though - hard to believe that they have 2 world cups and only 3.3m population.

Re: Drama in Soccer City
Brilliant penalty to clinch it. Fair play to Gyan for being the first up and twas a great penalty, but that won't lessen the hurt one little bit, for a player who's been to the fore for Ghana all tournament, it's extremely tough.
It would have been nice to see an African team in the semis with the tournament that's in it, but I'm happy to see Uruguay through, I'd be a fan of them and as you say TC they punch well above their weight. Holland - Uruguay in the semi then, who'd have thought it! I couldn't see Brazil getting beaten earlier, the way they were playing, and thought they'd outclass Uruguay in the semi. Holland won't have it all their own way although they'll be happy to see this go to penalties tonight.

Yeah, I've always been a Uruguay fan ever since reading about their victory over Brazil in the Maracana in 1950. Such a determined people, and such passion for the game.
Shame Suarez is missing for the semi, especially as he plays in Holland, but they still have scoring options up front. The Dutch won't have it easy.
And how good a footballer did Diego Forlan mature into...

Would you recall the carry-on of their captain, Senor Antonio Rattin, in the '66 S/F versus England???
Cost them the game..

Dramatic stuff indeed - Suarez has gone from zero to hero in a very short space of time - and who says cheating doesn't get you places.

He's brilliant, scores for fun in Spain and now doing it on the biggest stage of all, he's at the top table of strikers at the minute imo. I always got the impression he was a confidence player, didn't get off to a great start at Man Utd and the longer it got before he scored, the bigger the stigma it became. Since he went to Spain though he's improved immeasurably.
Suarez definately took one for the team there. According to the boys on the telly, should Uruguay happen to get past Holland, he'd be available for the final!

Come on Boxty, I'm only a young pup!
And that was Argentina. And it wasn't the semi.
Uruguay had a great captain in 1950 called Obdulio Varela. The local Brazilian newspaper proclaimed their side champions on the morning of the final. Varela's pre-game pep talk consisted of throwing a copy of the paper onto the dressing room floor and pissing on it.

Boxty wonders if it should be herewith re-defined as "WOGBALL" given that it's greatest exponents in the Premier Division are non-caucasian..??

I'm afraid I'm not down with this Uruguay love in. Instead I'm going to go a bit Jayo on them and hope the Dutch 'hammer 7 bells of ***** out of them'!!
I feel for Ghana, I thought they deserved to go through tonight but a cheat has prospered.

He got sent off and a penalty was awarded, that was sufficient punishment and Ghana failed to capitalise. It's not quite on the Henry or Maradona level of "cheating" seeing as he was caught. He took one for the team and it paid off, good luck to him, he made the right call! If an Irish player did this he would be a hero.

Re: Drama in Soccer City
I was hoping Uruguay would do well as I have a soft spot for them since 1966. In that tournament Uruguay and Argentina were the best teams in the tournament, better even than Brazil.
Brazil were butchered in the group, mostly by Portugal who were then awarded the fair play trophy, Uruguay were robbed blind against germany, and Argentina, and most pundits player of the tournament Antonio Rattin were robbed against England.
The powers that be had decided the trophy was for Europe that year.
And of course, the sky blue rig.

I know he got caught and was dealt with by the letter of the law as it stands but in cases such as that I'd do away with the penalty full stop and just award the goal. All you do in the current situation is transfer a whole lot of pressure onto a player on the the team that has been sinned against, to the point you wonder which team is being punished? We now have a player who is totally innocent who will be remembered for costing his team a place in the semi finals and a player who flagrantly abused the laws of the game who will be looked upon as some kind of hero, is that right? I guess ultimately it's a case of professionalism triumphing over sportsmanship.
Personally I hope Fifa look at this situation and if possible ban him for more than one match, if he wants to take one for the team then let him really take one for the team and risk the chance of missing the final.
