A lot of this thread talk was based/argued around last Sunday..the middle of May..a long way to go yet...
Discount Tyrone at your peril.....too many good players..... (Does age matter)??? Check with Jack O'Connor....
Tyrone will be "hard bet"...
True and yet......
A team of Mccartan, Doherty, O'Neill, and the rest would be hard bet but getting a bit old as well.
They looked ripe or the plucking last Sunday. I know they improved in 2008 but a lot has happened since.

Patrique appears lost in the mists of time or on the wrong forum....
Quoting the era of O'Neill, "Tub"McCartan and Doherty intermingled with other "no-marks" smacks of a man unsure of whom to quote...
So for you Pat: From 1960 to the modern day here are the best six IMO..
10. Sean O'Neill (Down).
11. Mattie McDonagh (Galway)
12. Pat Spillane (Kerry)
13. Mike Sheehy (Kerry).
14. Matt Connor (Offaly).
15. Maurice Fitzgerald (Kerry)
The runners-up were according to placement...
Cyril Dunne, Tony Hanahoe and Ciaran McDonald.
Colm O'Rourke, Eoin Liston and Peter Casnavan

So the entire McGuigan family rate somewhat below Pat Spillane on his own?
If we are to rate people by the baubles they collect.

You couled spend all day at this. I would have to include Canavan on any side from that era, and Liston.
And I would not have Matty McDonagh.

Thank you Jon, it was said to provoke debate.
Certainly his first point, and third were as good.
But O'Neill's was hailed by the media as the greatest point in history.
It was good, but not that good.
Scored better meself, and me better at the hurling.

Re: Antrim vs Tyrone
But if the media said it then it must be true..
The space he was aiming at was less than any of CJ's, threading the needle stuff.. That said CJ was being closed down quicker. It's a matter of opinion at the end of the day I suppose..
Once only I scored a better point than either. Along the sideline outside the '45 straight over the black spot.. Pity it was only the warm up, greater pity that I remained in the dugout for the actual game.

I was right behind the goal for O'Neill's point, the ball was heading straight for me.
The angle was acute, but not that acute.
I mean Gooch scores about 100 a year like that.
O'Neill is still carrying the after affects of those injuries which is a pity. At the Ranch (St Mary's) and in 2005 he was awesome.

Re: Antrim vs Tyrone
It was no Gooch v Cork last year your right in that, but first round of the Championship it was a fairly attractive score.. Johnston doesn't like to score unless he's at that kind of an angle..
You're right in that football wasn't something I was naturally talented at, I went much further with the small ball (well, by Cavan standards..) but never had the same grĂ¡ for it. But I was always a believer that you don't have to be able to fly to know the sky is blue...

Re: Antrim vs Tyrone
all the best managers, Mourinho, Wenger, harte, Boylan and sean Mcguiness were poor enough players.
Obviously Micko is the exception to the rule.
and Mancini of course.
