NFL - What has been asked of your county?
So now that all games have been played, what questions have been asked of your county team?

Have we peaked too soon or can we continue to build on the league and make a push for Ulster in the championship? I remember Carr started promisingly with Down as well, so lets hope history doesn't repeat itself!

I am more confused than I was 7 games ago but one thing is sure - Bernard Brogan is one helluva footballer. I posted a couple of years ago that he would be a much better player than Alan - and he's only a child!

he was on fire today JC a top quality forward and equally impressive of his left or right - mind you we give him enough room today to display the full repertoire of skills he has - i'd have fancied myself to get 4-5 points of the Tyrone defence today

Im looking forward to the Armagh vs Down rematch.
Armagh havent really been asked anymore questions they just haven't answered the questions in previous years...this year could be different.

the ball he was getting today was top drawer - why we didnt deploy a man to act as sweeper is beyond me

bocerty without using a sweeper- you need to have a speed merchant on brogan playing in front of him....I thought the tyrone team today was weak for a team that had to win to stay up

Last year it was fitness that ruined our season especially noticeable when the game went into extra time against Monaghan.
Going by match reports from fans players didn't stop running today, not the peak of summer yet but was a warm day and they just kept going.
Although it is only the league consistency is still a bit off but we are progressing.
Not playing defensive football as they did under McDonnell and Armagh are no racking up big scored. Defence is looking good restricted both Donegal and Tipperary in the past few weeks.
Re: NFL - What has been asked of your county?
Bernard can't carry us on this own. Teams will double up on him so its vital we get another couple of scoring forwards to capitalise on this. No matter how well he is marked his intelligence, speed and the right ball will see him score at least 5 points per game.

Jayo when you have a player like bernard- Make space and give him the ball he will do the rest.....
We will have at least 5 scoring forwards come the Wexford game...

We have a few lads alright - old and new - consistency needed though. Can't lean too heavily on BB - if he picks up an injury or sumtin ... But he's a fabulous player to watch.

Re: NFL - What has been asked of your county?
What was asked of us was whether we could stay up or not, and thankfully we could(by the smallest of margins). And also what was asked was could we find new players. As opposed to a few years ago, where we finished bottom having played our strongest team every game, we managed to stay in Division 1 having blooded many new young players and having been without alot of our regulars for much of the campaign.
I'd say we've found 5-6 lads who can be a real option in championship football with 3 or 4 of those who will be pushing for a starting spot against more experienced lads, it's that kind of competition and depth we've been badly lacking in recent years so the more players we find the better. We've been without Eoin Lennon and Gary McQuaid for the whole campaign, Damien Freeman only just came back for the Kerry game while JP & Dessie Mone and Rory Woods only played part of the league due to injury. So I'd be fairly happy with the outcome of the league for us having given the young lads valuable experience in big games against the top teams, with the old heads still to return/returning.

Re: NFL - What has been asked of your county?
Cavan wanted to develop some level of consistency and be in with a shot of promotion. 3 wins on the bounce, We blooded new players and realised that we can rack up some good scores without our scorer in Chief. Disappointing finish to the Sligo game robbed us of a realistic promotion chance and apparently we were dire today but still won thankfully so things not looking too bad. We should be looking at the second round of the championship at least with a possible few wins in the qualifiers given a favourable draw.
All of this was made possible by a solid effort from the GT supporters group.. Give yourselves a round of applause people!

The league final showdown between Armagh and Down should be a good indication of possible Championship success. Neither team really cares about winning the league, but the bragging rights between these two fierce rivals are much more important. Both teams got a whack at eachother a few weeks....two new-look Down & Armagh teams. I'm glad we play Armagh again (although would have loved hurling a bit of abuse at Armagh fans if they had not been promoted ), it'll be just like a Championship game with a big crowd, the Croke Park factor, and the bitter rivalry all adding to the intensity.
I've been able to wear the Down top arrogantly on the other side of the river for the past few weeks so I'm hoping Down do the business and spare me the slagging.

I got slagged loads at uni but it didnt bother me....championshipis where it counts and hopefully I will get my revenge then. Although I might have to settle for the league win if we get it because there is only a few weeks left of uni
Re: NFL - What has been asked of your county?
Due to work I haven't been at any games this year, but have been talking to the lads, and reading any report I can get my hands on.
Major questions still around the forward department. A few good footballers in there, but still physically small, and winning ball inside the 45 is going to be an issue come championship time. Midfield has potential, but is still very inconsistent.
Centre back position seems to have been strengthened by Mark Quinn, and the rest of the back-line looks (as always) to be the strongest element of the team.
A good league campaign, but other than centre-back, the questions around the team remain the same as they've been for the last year or two

Re: NFL - What has been asked of your county?
Obviously the league asked too much of Derry this year. We have a good enough team and a brilliant manager who, with the experience of the disappointment from last year, will make us a hard team to beat come Champo time!
I'm not expecting too much, i'll be delighted to get to the Ulster Final but if we get to the AI Quarter Final i will mark it down as a decent Championship. The main thing for me is the show of Championship progress and managerial continuity, we need to keep the man we have in place for for more than 3 years, unlike what usually happens in Derry!

Wexford footballers turned it around and beat the two teams that got promoted and only lost out narrowly on scoring difference (6 points I think). Hurlers last game v Aintrim next week and its a showdown between themselves and Clare (last final they will be in this year).
footballers redeemed themselves after last year still rebuilding and proved we can win games with out Mattie and we will win the big one when he gets back our first round match in leinster
